For context on the topic, please read this post.

After reaching out to the Lemmy.ml admins and Lemmy developers regarding the defederation of ani.social from Lemmy.ml and the exclusion of ani.social from join-lemmy.org, they have chosen to remain defederated from ani.social for "[containing] a lot of sexualized images and partial nudity" which goes against their rule against pornography.

However, because they have found no evidence of CSAM in ani.social, they have agreed to merge our pull request to include ani.social in join-lemmy.org.

We'd like to thank the Lemmy.ml admins and Lemmy developers for their careful consideration of our request. Although we had hoped to federate once again with Lemmy.ml, we believe they have valid reasons to remain defederated. We hope that this may be revisited in the future as Lemmy continues to evolve.

We apologize to our local users who regularly visit Lemmy.ml communities. If you wish to continue accessing Lemmy.ml communties, we suggest moving to an instance that is federated with both Lemmy.ml and ani.social.

While I don't agree with their decision or reasoning, this is their right to do. At the very least, it is nice that there is any kind of resolution rather than just locking down and preventing discussion.

I think the frustrating part of this is what appears to be a double standard in which a small instance is being held to a different standard than larger instances. If the ml admins don't want any NSFW communities federated to their server, then that is fine (and I would argue the *moe communities are a stretch to consider NSFW, but whatevs). However, communities on other instances that have similar content or even much more explicit content are still being federated with ml. Just looking at the largest instance, lemmy.world shows other *moe communities (1, 2), moe-adjacent communities (1, 2), and even extremely explicit content/communities (pulled up this very NSFW user from my blocklist for example). Even if we just look at communities that are local to ml, the content on the *moe communities doesn't seem out of line with art that I have seen in the honkai star rail community on their local instance.

In any case, I think this issue validates concerns that were raised after the initial defederation happened that the ml admins could come to view any kind of lewd content or fanservice as anathema to their instance. It begs the question if the anime or manga communities on ml are on borrowed time. If the admin's metaphorical Eye of Sauron passes over their community on a day a lewd clip, key visual, or trailer is posted, that could be it for them.

I think the best plan long-term is to try to build those communities here, in a space that is explicitly welcoming to the content. If we build an active and welcoming community here, I am hopeful that users will find it and activity will increase (though discoverability on the fediverse is a huge challenge). As a moderator, it is my job to make sure content in the communities I moderate doesn't cross the line to where a reasonable instance admin would feel the need to defederate and to make sure anything NSFW is marked as such.

Thanks to hitagi for the work on this in the background and the partial resolution. Time to just put this behind us and focus on building positive engagement here.

You're right. When I made the top level comment there was a lot of character art posted to that community that doesn't seem to be there any more. I don't see its removal listed in the modlog either, so I am not sure if the 0.19 transition has preserved all the logs or they could have been removed by the creator (which doesn't show up in the modlog) after the scrutiny applied to ani.social.

Since I was checking modlogs, I did notice that the ml admins removed a post from the anime community for violating rule 3 (no pornography) that was a key visual for an upcoming show ("Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian"). The post for the visual to the local anime community can be seen here. I don't think many people out there would consider that visual to be pornographic, but ultimately they can run their instance how they want.

me and rainshadow got banned, they got auto removed. You see comments from tamlyn removed on manga commynity as well for example.

TIL that getting banned from an instance removes all the content you have ever submitted. A side-effect of ani.social being defederated is that the posts made prior to defederation are still visible in the community that was federated to the ani.social instance (see here).

This entire situation is on one hand very unfortunate but on the other hand a perfect display for the superiority of the fediverse when it comes to censorship.

There has to be a conversation about who decides what does and doesn't go on join-lemmy.org though because the removal of ani.social for no apparent reason other than personal bias is not going to be the last time something like it happens given the very open and heavy political bias of the devs.
