It was called 'Le Monocle' because it was the fashion, at the time, for lesbians to wear a monocle to subtly signal their sexual preferences when more overt displays would have been inadvisable in public.

I’ve never tried to wear a monocle for a legitimate vision use. It seems like that would make things worse, wouldn’t it? Like, “well my monocle eye is my good eye, this other eye is much less important.” How the fuck…?

Iirc it's for bifocal vision, one eye is near the other far.

Vision impairment isn't always symmetrical, my left eye is shortsighted enough that I would need glasses when driving but my right eye is just a bit worse than average. My glasses have a way higher lens strength on the left side due to this.
