Barbara is right though, fireworks are a stupid tradition that can be better served with drone light shows or projection displays. They look way cooler, better for the environment, and don't cause unnecessary stress for dogs and war survivors (soliders or civilians can suffer PTSD from war).

Fuck fireworks.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Served way better depends on what you're goal is. For some people, the loud bang is the whole point. We've got 2 days a year where we shoot off fireworks, and everyone knows when they are. Only the animals are surprised. If we argue about necessity well just end up in the kind of argument that can logically lead to voluntary extinction. The amount of environmental disruption we consider acceptable is a matter of opinion, but it ain't ever zero.

This is doesn't make any sense and the strangest attempt at a red herring I've come across on Lemmy, there is no necessity. Period. It's still Independence Day whether or not you scare pets and veterans. You can celebrate with a BBQ like every other holiday. Basically you typed a lot of words just to say you don't care how your actions effect others, or that your two seconds of pleasure is worth the well being of animals and neighbors.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Who are you to dictate what is and isn’t appropriate way to celebrate?

Many people are considerate about it as well as take efforts to do it safely.

Yea you can celebrate in other ways, but then again, right back at you.

You ar absolutely right there is no necessity, shit there is no necessity tot he whole fucking holiday.

But if you look into the history of the fourth, you’ll see there are connections, not just tradition either.

I find this ironic because it can easily be reversed. Basically you typed a lot of words just to say you don’t care how or where the fireworks occur, bottom line they are bad

Can you drop the hyperbole and look at it rationally? Why is your stance “fuck all fireworks for the good of everyone”, and not “do it somewhere else”?

WE CAN ACCOMMODATE BOTH

I am impacted negatively by fireworks but I recognize that isn’t grounds to shout anyone down that isn’t negatively impacted. All I need is it just to not happen near my house. Simple as that

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

I just wish the people firing off the bang noise ones didn't do it near me. I switch to panic attack. Each bang is literal pain for me... Blehg I used to not be like this...

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

At least don't be the asshole that pops them off on any day that isn't the holiday in question.

Like, at least on the day of, there's sort of a tacit understanding for people with PTSD and nervous pets that THIS is the day to be prepared for and get through, so at least people know to be ready for it. Doing it on any other day and surprising them with it is such a self-centered, inconsiderate dickhead move.

Always blows my mind how much we hear red-blooded patriots go on about "the troops," just to go and celebrate their patriotism by stressing the shit out of all the veterans in their neighborhood.

Did Barbara consider its why we do what we do?

Everyone is free to be a dick. Still makes them a dick.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Try to remember who earned that freedom

Go next door and knock and just let them know you are going to be setting off fireworks. It isn’t that hard to be nice

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (3 children)

LMFAO

earned what freedom? americas last “righetous” war was ww2 and just about every vet from that war is just about dead. fuck all USA soldiers post ww2 and fuck the usa. awwww have a lil ptsd from blowing up brown kids in the middle east? give me a break.

feel bad for the dogs tho

Imagine for a moment that you are a dumbass 17 year-old high school senior in 2002. Your grades are shit and you're just barely going to graduate. Many of your friends are excited about going to college, while you are pretty sure that working behind the counter at the local gas station is basically all you've got.

Suddenly, a wild recruiter appears! He has a cool looking uniform and people say "Thank you for your service" and he gets treated with respect wherever he goes. He says he's got a $30k signing bonus for you. He says you can choose whatever job you want, you don't have to go get shot at. He says in 4 years when you get out, you'll have skills and experience those college pussies won't, you'll get a good job and they'll bitch on the internet about working at Starbucks. He says you can even go to college if you want, Uncle Sam will pick up the tab and you can spend 4 years getting drunk and laid.

Would you go, as this dipshit 17 year-old?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

You've got to think about this in the context of the time, too. This was actually almost exactly me - I graduated in 2002; I had fine grades, but this was immediately following 9/11, and the fact of the matter is that patriotism was being pushed hard from every angle. We were being fed propaganda from every media outlet. It wasn't just recruiters pulling the normal bullshit, they were using 9/11 to spin a narrative where the country is in danger and only we, as that time's 18 year olds - could possibly save it, and if we didn't enlist, we were basically personally responsible for whatever happened. That, on the backs of our parents' encouragement - you've got to remember that many of our fathers had fought in wars themselves, and many had glorified it in stories, and we were simply not equipped to look at any of it critically yet - made it very hard to say "No".

I enlisted; I spent 3 months in boot camp, 2 months of that with pneumonia and eventually they sent me home, and frankly I think that's the most fortunate thing that's ever happened to me. I wouldn't have been fighting - I would have been sitting behind a desk writing code - but I don't think that matters much in the end.

It's really easy for someone who wasn't in that position to say "Oh, yeah, anyone who falls for that is just stupid", but the fact of the matter is, propaganda is effective. That's why it continues to be used, all over the world, and at that particular time, the propaganda was driving patriotism and paving the way for military enlistment and the addition of laws that stripped away rights and made everyone think mass surveillance was good and necessary, and it did its job.

no lol. Youre a fucking idiot if you just sign up for war because a recruiter sweet talks you. Sorry but youu gotta think and actions have consequences. Being a dumb kid isnt an excuse to go die for a war machine. Know who i respect? that 17 year old that works in trades or becomes a garbageman or post office worker. i respect those guys. no sympathy for dumbasses who dont think and then kill kids because orders are orders and they can and never will think for themselves. Fuck them

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Jesus, dude. Chill a bit. They were kids who were sold a bill of goods. Some of them legitimately believed they were doing something good and noble when they enlisted, and the people in power abused that ideology. It's not the veteran's fault. Hold people in power responsible, not the people who trusted them.

Edit: there's no sense in arguing with you on this. I just saw your other comments, seems like you've got zero empathy. Wish you the best, champ. Hope you find some compassion in your life.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

So the Wehrmacht who killed scores of jews were also “sold a false bill of goods” and just following orders right?

and nah i dont think i will chill bb gurl, go fuck yourself

and dont worry i do blame the governments and corporations that systematically keep people poor and then force them into said war machine and keep these forever wars going. I just also dont blindly excuse killers cuz they are poor. Go get a real job like a dishwasher or a sex worker.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think this is the forum to have this conversation, and anything I say will just prompt you to personally attack me. I think you should open your mind to other points of view and think critically.

Have a good day, and be well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

lmao im not the one killing kids in foreign countries for oil. assholes who sign up for the military should think “critically” and “open up their minds.”

good riddance and fuck off.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's a difference of being complicit and taking place in killing women/children and men in the thousands than being in the US military. Sit the fuck down and treat people how you expect to be treated.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

U sit the fuck down cunt. How do you think a fucking machine works? it doesnt matter if you are personally puttin a bullet in the kids head personally its called being complicit you dumb whore

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Blaming the soldiers is like calling up Verizon because your internet is out and yelling at the CSR you talk to like it's their fault. They (generally speaking) didn't ask to get sent to kill brown people for oil companies' profits.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

oh dont worry i hate the corporations and goverments much much much more, but soldiers are still complicit. If you blindly sign up to go in the human meat grinder without thinking about it why should i have sympathy? So ya fuck all USA imperialism and if you willingly sign up to be apart of it fuck you too

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

those people "blindly" signing up see no other way to get an education or even survive. they're victims of systemic issues too and your lack of empathy for them disturbs me

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Except people can still work normal fucking jobs you cunt. I have the upmost sympathy for anyone who is poor in this god forsaken country. But joining the fucking military is not the only fucking way to survive and i think people who think that joining a fucking war machine that kills innocent POORER people in 3rd world countries is justified because they themselves are poor is such an unbelievably stupid and evil way to think. I respect the actual heroes of this country like those who work minimum wage jobs but not those who will kill someone else just so they can get “free” college. So no i have so much fucking empathy for poor people but that empathy is lost when they become literal fucking killer dogs for corporations. Id fuckin suck cock for money before id ever serve this country. So no i dont lack empathy, bitch boy.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You're a fucking asshole. Why not conversate instead of being an aggressive little fuck? It's possible not to be an unmoveable prick and talk instead of being an opinionated little dicked fuck, you know that right? Actually no, I highly doubt you do know that. You probably have the "it's the internet bro" type of mindset and don't have the brain to actually hold a legit conversation without having to yell your point and feel like you've "won."

Your tiny world view and your lack of empathy for people is sickening and I hope you get some help getting your head out of your ass.

I'm not sure how getting shelled by al-Qaeda earned your freedom. I think it just made people afraid of fireworks...

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Except for the few thousand ww2 vets left no living American service member fought for anybody's freedom

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago

Still doesn’t mean you should be a dick and start setting off fireworks a week before the 4th

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Fireworks suck. I didn't even like them as a kid.
