I think it would be great if this option would be optimized. When I scroll my homepage I read many posts, but I rarely open them. These posts don't count as read, so every time I want to scroll through new posts I happen to find the same posts I've already read, even 24 hours ago. Furthermore, I don't like being unable to see my own posts when this option is enabled.

The posts count as read when you Upvote/Downvote them, might be a good habit to get into ;)

Yeah but I'd like to avoid downvoting niche topics just because I'm not interested in it. It would be neat if there was simply a "read" button to hide that particular post. Or maybe just a "hide" button since that's what I'd be using it for!

Yeah, it curates your homepage into just stuff you don't like.
