Howdy, gardeners! Exciting day, the first tomato of the season! This is particularly heartwarming for me as this is a new home, new garden, new tomato cultivar! This is a Gardener's Delight, in a felt pot! I'm in Tacoma, Zone 8b. How are your tomato babies doing?

You inspired me to get some tomatoes going so I brought home two starts: beefsteak and jet star. Both indeterminate. One already has a little tomato. Should I pluck it and let the vine grow larger in the dirt first?

Yeah, you should probably pluck it and plant it. It'll help focus energy to the roots and leaves.

Congratulations!

First year growing tomatoes, so I know absolutely nothing about cultivars or even how to properly keep them alive, it seems. I basically got two plants from the garden center. One of them are roma tomatoes, the plant is rather wilting away but it has two very sorry looking tomatoes. The other one is looking really good and has tons of cherry tomatoes.

Is it too late to start growing these, you think? Every time it occurs to me that I want to grow, it’s always too late in the season. Damn.

Nah. Plant em! Make sure you get an indeterminate type. Depending on where you live you might have a pretty long growing period! And you can always invest in a hothouse when the temperatures drop. That's my plan! 😎

Wow! I’m in Portland and I haven’t even put in my tomatoes yet. Great job!

Gardener's delight is amazing. I planted a few last year and was eating tomatoes as snacks and they seemed endless. So indescribably delicious compared to store tomatoes!

This year I started them late but I have some more gardener's delight alongside some tiny tims. I might have to wait until September to eat them but I'm still looking forward to it. I'm in Sweden. Don't know the zone designations for these parts.

Looks like your hardiness will vary by your location!. I'm growing Oxhearts besides the gardener's delight but they are taking their time, they've just put out flowers.
