Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/ https://mastodon.social/@christianselig/110509739563895220

Oh lord, spez is doing an AMA tomorrow about the api pricing stuff. This is gonna be a bloodbath

@peachykeen of course 🙄. They are trying to save face now. I predict it will be full of a bunch of BS excuses about how they had to do this and that it’s a fair pricing for the service blah blah blah 🙄. I hope it’s a bloodbath and I hope they are run out of that AMA. #reddit #apollo #redditapi

I, like many other Lemmy users on other instances, am bracing for a new most downvoted comment on Reddit and I'll be leaving my account open long enough to contribute to telling that swine exactly how I feel. u/fistfulofbottlecaps might just get banned tomorrow.

We should just all work on getting Lemmy more known. If they ban the account, no harm done, really. I know many people aren't going back.

I think it would be funny if everyone boycotted the ama and there was just nothing there, no comment, no questions. But I know that will never happen, people's emotions are too high.

I know this is a wildly silly take on my part, but his post brought a little tear to my eye. It's a fantastic app, a genuine pleasure to use, and they're doing him so dirty. They spoke to him over the phone then lied and mischaracterized his statements after the fact, but because he's a sharp one he recorded the calls and has the receipts. I feel pretty bad for the guy.

Plus it's so weird to see a site that's been a big part of my life dying. I've made good irl friends on it, experienced major news events through it, etc. Feels bad, man.

@shua_too it really is the end of an era. It sucks, I remember the early Reddit days and how quickly it exploded after Digg imploded. That early Reddit community was freaking awesome. Over time though the site became more popular and slowly started to sellout. It’s been trending downhill for a while now though so I look at this as a sort of blessing in disguise. A chance to start fresh with a new community and establish new friendships we might not have otherwise.

They really are doing Christian dirty. I think his app really did help #Reddit grow in ways they would never admit. I LOVE that he had the foresight to record those calls he knew they are shady to the core. He’s a smart guy and I have no doubt he’ll set out on his next great project. Really hoping he decides to tweak #Apollo for #lemmy just as a nice little 🖕 to Reddit. Lol.

And the irony about the whole situation is that Reddit is taking the old stance of "let's sell out our users that got us here in the first place in exchange for an IPO and make some money now." Dude, if you didn't have your current userbase you wouldn't be thinking about doing an IPO because you wouldn't be able to generate enough corporate interest to support it. And soon at least a portion of that userbase is going to leave because of your decisions.

We really need a reddit switch like we have the nsfw switch.
