Yep one of the videon in my playlist was suddenly members only. Fortunately it wasn't anything special but a worrying sign of things to come.
Interestingly, it seems it's been in the works since 2019.

I had no idea- this is easily the most disheartening news I've heard regarding youtube. Maybe it will help kill my addiction to it
Have been around for a while. I think I saw it for the first time ~2 years ago.
I had no idea, first time seeing it today. That's crazy
I subscribe directly to YouTube through RSS. I get everything a channel releases so I get quite a few of these. Its for some paid channel membership thing I think.
It's even worse than getting an RSS post that a new video is released and when I check it out it's blocked - Says video will premiere in so-and-so many hours, with a countdown on the video page. It's a video, children make them. Big whoop.
Will they play on Invidious?
What is invidious? Is it kinda like revanced or something?
Sort of. It has some similarities in that there are no ads, but Invidious is more privacy focused. Instead of accessing YouTube's API directly, it scrapes the content which is hosted on individual Invidious instances. Moreover, you can register an account to save playlists and such, which will be completely unattached from your Google account.
One thing that some people don't know is that you can copy/paste a YouTube URL into the searchbar of any Invidious instance, and it will find that video immediately. I do this a lot when I want to watch a video, but I don't want to contribute views to a particular channel, for whatever reason.
I'm definitely going to check this out then. Thanks for the heads up, it sounds amazing
I've not encountered it personally, but YouTube Memberships, their version of Patreon, has been a thing for over a year now. It's what the "Join" button on YouTube sends you to
