Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Make it 2D, put some anime babe cover art on it, and drop it on every digital storefront you can find. Easy money, baby.

I don't know what a Metroidvania is

Sprawling game world where progress is gated behind item acquisition. (Need the freeze-ray to open certain doors, or the high-jump boots to get up to certain platforms, etc.)

To add to this: the origin of the name comes from Castlevania games that were made in the style of Metroid games (above definition), it later became a definition for all games with similar gameplay where your map progression is gated behind gear/skill progression. Great examples are, obviously, Metroid and Castlevania, but "recently" we got Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, Grime and some others. Objectively you could say that Hollow Knight is the primary cause of the genre's recent popularity with indie developers, as it was a super successful indie game.

Ah thank you! Not OP, but I've not known for the longest time and been too scared to ask :)
