So #Microsoft will be monetising "not rebooting" #Windows: You can avoid security update-related reboots by paying for a monthly subscription.

For now, this feature will be available for Windows Server 2025, but I see great business potential in the consumer market...

Coming soon: Progress bars that mysteriously slow down to take seemingly forever when they're showing 85% done, but a button pops up offering "pay $5 to finish now."

@[email protected] "Nice flow you've going there, would be a shame if I had to reboot"

Is restarting really that big of a deal? Even with servers you just do it during a maintenance window. These days 90% of what I had open opos back up when I log back in.

Not overly expensive. But I have to wondering how bad the reporting will become, how many false alerts will be generated, how 3rd party vulnerability scanners will detect it as needing a reboot before it's patched.

Based on Microsoft's track record for service alerts over the last year, I can see a lot of headaches incoming.

The Ubuntu Pro model.

@harrysintonen Reducing the reboots required for patching benefit not only the ecosystem, but Microsoft themselves, so directly that they should pay us to opt into reboot-free patching.
