Why didn't you get a Steam deck if you wanted one? I don't see how it's related to Switch 2. Those play different games.

Your comment should not have elicited as much laughter as it did.

Those play different games

Not true. The deck can emulate Switch games. 😌

Exclusives are cancer. Computers should be able to compute everything. Nintendo's/console strategy is an absolute travesty for human progress, like almost all capitalist strategy.

How much e-waste is generated due to equipment that could be redundant if not for exclusives. Not just the consoles either, but all the accessories.

My understanding is that the console hardware itself isn't even that profitable, in the same way that lower-end printers are just platforms to sell ink.

Razors and blades - every console game has a, IIRC, ~$5 platform holder fee, which goes to Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo. So if you buy a Playstation at-cost and then buy 5 games, then Sony makes ~$25 in profit.

Yep. But aren't we glad we have competition! Aren't we glad we duplicate research/work all the time! We'd never think of improvements without this.

I mean, yeah, but at the same time, a Nintendo game being a Nintendo exclusive product doesn’t seem that weird to me. If it was an external studio, sure. But it’s the same company. I agree that it’s annoying, but I don’t think it’s an unreasonable tactic if you control the vertical and you actually DO build good hardware and software that play well together, and you want to leverage the multiplicative effect there.

[–] Azzu@lemm.ee 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Sure, I'm not unreasonable. I hate against exclusives, because I'm sure it'd be better without them, but Nintendo is not entirely terrible. It's never completely black & white.

Reading articles is over rated. Just make a comment solely based on the title. Good move.

Yeah, 45% tariffs on Japan and 32% on Taiwan is going to make pricing brutal in the US. I wouldn’t be surprised if $450 and $80 for Mario Cart effectively goes up.

Was there anything about the SoC it uses? What architecture is it?

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Iirc it's an nvidia arm chip with a little over 1500 cuda cores from the ampere generation(30 series), so less power than a 3050 (non ti) which has 2300-2560 cuda cores.

Steamdeck is better in every way anyway.

[–] sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Well, except the games that'll only work on Switch and not Steam Deck.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 7 points 1 week ago

Eh, Nintendo copyright striking switch emulators right before this release makes me wonder if Switch 2 games can be emulated in the same fashion. If so, then that leaves mainly online multiplayer games that can't be played, and online switch games are not a great experience.

Don't you worry! Its just that they're busy suing a grandma and a three year old. Once both are properly in jail for saying "it's me Mario" in public, they'll be back making their oh so great video games. Give them more money so they can start more lawsuits.

Honestly, I’ll still get a Switch 2 for the first party games, but there’s no way in hell I’ll buy a third party game for it if I can add the game to my Steam library. Steam Deck + living room “console” PC is pretty perfect if you know what you’re doing.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

You are gonna spend over $700 for a few first party games?

I'm just asking cause that's the cost, $500 console plus extra controller plus the games quickly blooms into nearly a $1000 purchase for a few games.

I just can't justify spending $250 per game I would play on it currently.

It felt really bad during the third party showcase for games like Elden Ring and Hogwarts that have been available on the steam deck since launch.

I just bought a refurbished steam deck last year for less than the price of the Switch 2 and will have a hard time justifying the purchase. I do love Nintendo though and typically buy a good chunk of their first party games. The new 3D DK looks amazing and I loved the BotW Warriors title, so I have high hopes for the new as well.

It was the fact that they didn't show a new UI or added features to the base console. It's effectively only a Nintendo game player and nothing else where as previous consoles were also note taking apps and a calendar and you could doodle animations or even take photos on some of the DSs.

They added no other functionality to this console and left it with less than previous ones. It only plays the games and that's it.

At least a steam deck you can use a browser and watch videos on it too if you really wanted. The only reason to buy the switch is the games now which makes the price per game astronomical effectively.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey, that's not completely fair. They added a C-button that activates GameChat, so you can take up space on an already small screen to watch your friends stream their face or their game at 9 frames per second. Oh and also a microphone. Revolutionary stuff, really

Don't forget the mouse feature in the joycons!
