Meanwhile On Grad

Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. β€” Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech β€” You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia β€” (Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism β€” No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion β€” Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

It's hilarious how upset they get at people saying CCP.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I once had a comment deleted on grad with the mod message β€œis the see see pee in the room with you now?”

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

I mean, yeah, probably - they hacked the shit out of the communications infrastructure, right?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Which is especially weird, considering that the official Mandarin name for the CCP is "Zhōngguó Gòngchǎndǎng", the first word of which is the Mandarin word for "Chinese." The literal translation yields the common name, not the special name that MLs insist is the only acceptable one.

I had a conversation with a "Democrats betrayed us on Gaza" account, during which time it started to seem pretty likely to me they they couldn't speak Arabic but were pretending that they could. That was pretty interesting. Instead of being able to speak on the Arabic details we were talking about, they started dissembling into a pattern of (1) hostility (2) accusing me of being the person in the wrong because I am bad (3) randomly changing the subject, making nonsensical statements, and insisting that they were right. Sort of like these examples:

If you start looking closely, it's only a small number of accounts that tend to "argue" in that very particular way, and they almost all have the same particular political views. I wonder why.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't think it's a small number of accounts that argue that way. It's typical of all online users when they are wrong and don't have a response.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

It's common to lash out when embarrassed, especially toward the thing you perceive caused the embarrassment.

I don't think that's a political indicator, it's just an indicator that it's human (or at least trained on human interactions, especially online interactions)

Just more evidence to push towards "they are targeting places as fringe as lemmy now" conclusion in our previous conversation.

I'm Ukrainian American and got blocked from the Ukraine sub. These people are just as bad as reddit. No difference

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Your instance is home to lots of tankies. I would personally consider jumping ship.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Is that what it is lol? I didn't even know.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I don't think it's a lot. Most are sane but they are trying to infiltrate with extra accounts.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That could be the case. However, your instance admins don't seem to want to do much modding. I've seen lots of questionable comments from there including hate speech and all sorts of bizarre takes. It might all one person for all I know but it looks the same from the outside. I haven't blocked your instance as of yet but if the spam increases I might have to unfortunately.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

A lot of places that are "full of tankies" actually have more people not like that in them. However, the moderation is another story. So while you may not get that feeling from the general user base, that is because it is often the mods people are talking about. Unless it's like hexbear, which were brigading and shit.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

Apparently there's a decently sized community on the instance I'm on. It's got a different vibe than most similar reddit communities though

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Wait a minute, so who's moderating the Ukrainian sub then? Another Ukrainian-American, a Ukrainian, or a foreigner?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Good question.

the ml Ukraine comm commonly has the type shit my coworker fought in a civil war to combat. it's russian separatist bullshit. the sopuli (i think that's the right instance) is the respectworthy one. there was a comm hosted in Kyiv but i hear there was an issue with the domain name registrar that has yet to be resolved so that one's basically dead.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Interesting, thanks for the information. It appears that the sopuli instance is a Finn group, and doesn't appear to be Ukrainian at first glance.

If Taiwan doesn't exist where do these mfers keep getting CPUs from to spread their nonsense on the internet? After all it was made in a country that doesn't exist and didn't exist when it was made

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

CSMC of course!

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago

These West Taiwan folks sure are strange

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago

Gotta love when foreigners try to correct you on your language

Sleeper agent activation phrase:

The mitochondria is...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's just that oxidative phosphorylation with the mitochondria is dramatically more efficient than basic ass glycolysis. Animals couldn't exist as fast moving creatures without mitochondria.

The meme about the mitochondria is only for people that haven't taken biochemistry. But the citric acid cycle is super interesting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 weeks ago

They made a small bag covered in proteins and use the energy from breaking down citric acid to keep pumping in protons.

The protons can leave, but they have to push a turnstile that phosphoralyzes adp first.

It's simple, but elegant, rube-Goldberg reduced to its essentials.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

You may be a paid agent, but not for long. I'm reporting screenshots of this straight to DOGE.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Trying to hide your affiliation is pointless, that's why I just put it and my callsign in my username

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Wow misread these so hard.

Guess 90% of people are CIA agents then if they are going to get mad about a common denomination.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

yo, i got my own personal troll now, too!
