Hello all!

I run a jellyfin server on an old laptop. I want to cast media from my Android phone (jellyfin app) to my Chromecast. For this, I will also need subtitles because anime.

So far I have been using VLC as an external player but casting with subtitles is not supported. Switching to exo player / web player also seems to not allow for subtitles or at least it makes the media run poorly (blocky, needs to buffer, ...)

Anyone managed to get subtitles to their Chromecast? Learning Japanese sadly would take to long haha

If you ever decide to move away from Chromecast to something a bit more DIY, I'm almost done making a decent casting replacement! Currently working on default and changing subtitles.

Send me a message if you ever find yourself interested in setting it up!

It works fine with wifidirect on samsung tvs. Not sure why chromecast would be any different. Do you have the srt files setup correctly?

How would I know if they are set up correctly? They display correctly on my phone and also the laptop, only when casting it doesn't work

I'm afraid I don't have a solution, just wanted to say that I also have problems with subtitles when casting from Jellyfin Android to Chromecast. It works okay with external .srt-files as subtitles (I just select them in the app before starting to play the video), but scrolling or pausing the playback causes the subtitles to go out of sync, especially during transcoding. Switching between different subtitles also does not work as expected, sometimes the selected language does not match the displayed subtitle (though it does if streaming directly on the Android device or using the web client).

I even bought a Roku player because I heard it should work better than the Chromecast, but in fact it is worse (with regard to subtitles).
