One thing that has been annoying me lately are self checkout machines. They play the same pre-recorded message every time you're done using them. Some pointless message in the lines of "Thank you for using self checkout" or "Thanks for shopping with us". You've heard it a dozen times already from the surrounding machines by the time you complete your transaction and then it yells it at you. I feel terrible for the employee who has to stand there all day and have this stupid 3 second recording be the soundtrack of their day. I only have to listen to it for five minutes every week and I hate it already. This message must be playing in their nightmares at night.

What I hate even more is they more and more stores are disabling the mute button, leaving you with Loud and Louder as your only volume choices.

When I worked self checkout at Safeway, first thing I would do at the start of my shift is mute every self checkout register. You can tell if a customer needs help from the lights alone; no need for the obnoxious, repetitive script. But unfortunately a lot of cashiers are too stupid to realize what the lights are for, so they crank the volume so that their Boomer ears can hear them. Drives me nuts.

Where do they use self checkouts with voice messages? Never saw one (thanks every fucking god)

Costco and Loblaws in my area. Costco is even more annoying because it yells instructions on how to use the machine at you at every step. Every time. The moment you approach the machine it yells at you to scan your membership card. Then it yells at you to scan your items. Then it yells at you to put it in the bag area. Then it yells at you to use the PIN pad. Then it yells at you to thank you for shopping at Costco.

I'm wondering how many people got kicked out of the store already for snapping and yelling back at the machine to STFU.

Walmart self-checkout machines are silent. But now I force myself to shop at Loblaws instead of Walmart to support a Canadian company instead of an American one. Who would have thought that Galen Weston would be a lesser evil.

Australian ones normally speak.

“Thanks for shopping with Coles”

Not like some of us have a choice…

Every single one in the Czech Republic. Some only play if you are slow to whip out the next item or card.

"Scan your [trademark] loyalty app to collect 3 points"

Doesn't mention the tiny "skip" button on the screen.

Do not speak unless spoken to. Do not correct my typing unless I accept the suggestion. Do not automatically check the “send me spam” checkbox.

Software is better when it only does the thing a human requests of it, and no more.

This is why Linux is objectively superior. Machine, do as I command!
