Great Idea for food waste (www.toogoodtogo.com)

This app doesn't seem to be as popular in the US as in Europe. But I thought it was pretty amazing how they were able to basically create a collective of retailers and stores that want to sell their day old food rather than throw it in the trash. We REALLY need something like this in the US in every city.

I’ve used it a few times here in Europe. Restaurants and Hotels can be hit or miss with the stuff you get, but the grocery bags have been decent. Great for smoothie making! You just need a decent amount of freezer space if you get a bunch of bread lol.

I haven’t tried the delivery feature yet though.

I use the app in the US from time to time. In my area it’s been meh. Some places kind of abuse it by getting rid of “stuff” that isn’t anything they’d properly sell or people would buy. For example one bakery by us throws random things in a pie tin. Other places have somewhat unrealistic pickup times, like nine to eleven pm. It makes sense from the restaurant’s perspective and must work out for someone, but not me.

But I’ve found a few places that are great and seem to engage with the idea in good faith. I love the idea overall.

I use it pretty regularly in the US for a few specific things. The bagel store and the Jamaican takeway are the best ones near me, but I also hit it up when out of town to find some local treats on the cheap.

Always got some pretty good stuff, though after a year or so of doing it, I did get very temporarily screwed. Went to the bagel store to pick up my order yesterday and it had closed early. Submitted a refund request with a photo of the deserted store and the sign on the door saying sorry closed early, and I had my refund before I pulled out of the parking spot. So great on them, not so great for the store not notifying me, but they usually give me more than they should and sometimes they even let me pick what goes in my order, so I'm going to let it slide.

Ah, yes. The „Green” company that still uses a fuckload of trackers fueilng the everything but green ad industry.

Its not the only startup using trackers, selling user data, and then pretending to be green. See my blog for example: https://writeas.xyz/luffy879/start-ups-are-not-your-friends
