Rules

The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World's rules. You can click the link but we've reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn't a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.

1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.

A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn't rulebreaking and we can't be supportive to them then we probably shouldn't engage.

B. No illegal content.

C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.

D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.

E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.

2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/[email protected])

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won't

You should also include either:

[email protected]

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn't get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn't actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.

MODERATORS

Hey everyone,

I started a couple of Harry Potter themed communities focused on various Harry Potter Ships, they're based off of the Subreddits with the same names, and I'm looking for some potential moderators to help manage them, as well as some potential users.

I’m not sure Lemmy is big enough to have communities for specific ships.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Then again, people seem to be looking for alternatives to big tech lately. There's probably interested people out there, but it might be more efficient to recruit outside of Lemmy.

I don't know what a ship is and after checking out a community I still don't understand, but I hope they are successful whatever it is they are doing. :)

ship

It's a couple for characters. Leia and Han are a ship

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

'ship' as in 'relationship'

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

TIL ha ha, it never crossed my mind

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No offense intended, but... Attempting to create Harry Potter themed communities while JK Rowling holds the rights to them, on a social media platform with a huge trans/enby population, doesn't seem like it would go very far.

As much as I enjoy Harry Potter, fuck Rowling and I will be looking forward to the day she dies or sells the IP.

I think that "The Death of the Author" applies even if the author is still alive. Just because a creator is or has become a jerk doesn't mean we can't enjoy their work.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Not when the author proudly flaunts the fact that every dime spent on her works goes towards eradicating trans people. (Yes, that was a bit hyperbolic, but she absolutely has stated that if you're enjoying Harry Potter then you're helping her fight against trans people).

To be fair, I honestly enjoy Harry Potter. However, I don't want to give people the temptation to buy books or go see movies.

Hello,

The current most active community is [email protected], maybe you can start posting there first? It's not a very popular topic on Lemmy, so your posts should get good visibility

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's not a very popular topic on Lemmy

Yeah. There are a lot of trans and queer users around here, and anything to do with the High Transphobe of TERF Island is bound to get a bit of the cold shoulder.

And rightly so.

I completely understand where you're coming from.

I happen to be Queer myself (MtF, Pansexual, although all of my life, I have been forced to present as Male.)

Where I am coming from is:

1.) As the other commenter mentioned, there's no monetary value for JKR for there to be HP-Themed communities.

2.) By making Fics, "non-canon" pairings, Fan-Art, etc., YOU control the initiative.

I.e, you want Harry to be gay, make him gay, want him to be trans, BAM!, now he's Trans.

You can make him Gay /Straight/Black/White/Fat/Slim/Good/Evil/etc.

Same thing with all of the other characters.

Don't let JKR win by ruining it for you.

3.) It's not like I set up a requirement that everyone who joins has to donate to a gofundme for JKR, Joining and participating is COMPLETELY free.

IDK, just my two cents.

As the other commenter mentioned, there's no monetary value for JKR for there to be HP-Themed communities.

Yes there is, because it helps keep her relevant

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That community is doing okay. From an ethical perspective, the author doesn't get any benefit from us posting meme or fan arts about that universe.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

That’s totally ok. I know there are critiques of that, but by and large I don’t agree with them.

It’s just that thinking about Harry Potter stuff makes me think of the wicked witch of the TERFs, and that makes me sad. And angry.

And I need to save my anger for other stuff right now.

I actually originally applied for an account on leaky_cauldron, but I never got a response back, so instead I decided to make one on Literature.Cafe

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, the admin on diagonlemmy isn't very reactive.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that diagonlemmy feels somewhat dead?

Like, all of the posts only have one upvote, and the whole community just doesn't feel very active, at least IMO.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

This post had 93 votes: https://lemmy.cafe/post/12021854

Let me check from your instance

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Alright so I just manually parsed the comments theree: https://literature.cafe/post/16567061

The federation seems to be a bit clunky between your instance and that community.

the whole community just doesn’t feel very active, at least IMO.

Even beyond the federation issues, that's unfortunately the level of activity for HP on Lemmy at the moment. I've been trying to post there every few days, but I'm mostly the only one with @[email protected]

We can usually quite a few votes and some comments, but that's it. You can maybe create a post there to promote your communities as well. The community still has 532 subscribers, all of them interested by HP, so you might find a few people into ships

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm not particularly interested in the non-canon ships, but I suppose I could take the Harry and Ginny one. I don't (yet) have an account on literaturecafe though, which could present moderation challenges.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

@[email protected]

Would you like for me to mod this account, and then later on you could potentially mod yourself if you ever decide to make a Literature. Cafe Account?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

I've applied for an account on LiteratureCafe, I'll let you know when it is approved.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You can't appoint mods from non-local accounts unfortunately

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Is Literature.Cafe down?

I'm completely unable to login, and whenever I attempt to click on any page about Literature.Cafe online, I just keep getting an error message.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Huh, that's odd, I'm pretty sure I did exactly that for [email protected].
