All they had to do was create an app on par with 3rd party apps, rollout ads in their API, and then display less ads on their own app. Once enough people transition, you can turn the ads back to what you were planning.
That requires insight, planning, and paying engineers to make something usable.
Spez couldn't read a room if his life depended on it.
