They only stopped because the people weren't able to learn intuitively. A lot of the most impressive and essential things we do rely on this unconscious ability. Turns out they didn't just want sex dolls, but competent slaves. People with prefrontal lobotomies can't properly care for themselves, even if they are compliant.
