Why not use a more secure app than Telegram which doesn't have ads? I saw people mentioning matrix, signal, and simplex channels. Dunno if they're still around.

While I rather use more secure apps for following public channels, sadly they don't exist on other platforms.
Gotcha. Maybe I'm underestimating just how many projects use telegram as a public channel...
Does it support unifiedpush like nagram and mercurygram?
Nope, it didn't when I last checked (mb ½year ago). Also, it has analytics and stuff.
I personally ended up cloning mercury and adding a few of those patches myself, which is quite easy since you don't need to add toggles (you always use what you use, and can skip adding what you don't use)
I believe not, the foss release will make the app run in the background to check for notifications.
I liked this app, but it forced auto update without an option to disable so I switched back to Telegram FOSS.
Telegram has ads? I still use TG everyday mainly for work and I never seen a single ad, but I'm interested on other features I'll give it a try
They show ads in public channels with high amount of users.
Ahh OK, I didn't join any public channel so I don't know that
