I've actually heard a fairly common motivation tip is to not tell people when you've started a new project or healthy habit.

Some people believe that sharing the news with people is what ultimately gives you the feelgood chemicals, and then suddenly you have less desire to do the thing.

I don't think this is to say that you shouldn't share your accomplishments. In fact, if you struggle with perfectionism, you might never think that you're totally finished a project. But if you're in the tenuous first stages of a new activity, it might benefit you to wait until things are a little more concrete before sharing the fun stuff.

How did you just describe the downfall of every hobby I've ever tried.

  • I try a hobby
  • I get excited
  • I tell someone about what I'm learning
  • Hobby dies

I am trying really hard to get back into my practicing hobbies after a hiatus, because I want to get good, but I'm also struggling with the fact that, by the time I'm good, I won't be able to appreciate it because I'm aware of all the practice I put into it, and it becomes my normal.

I also struggle with committing years to something.

I heard and kinda do this exact thing based off a TED Talk from years ago.

It kinda works, until you need to start telling your manager wtf you're working on and how much progress you've made 🤦

“You let me look inside that box right now, Schrödinger!!”

On the good side your family and friends start just not believing you when you say you're going to do this thing

On the bad side sometimes (so far exactly once for me) a friend will implement the idea you sketched that time and haven't done yourself, and they do it wrong

Best thing is, when you finally do do the thing, everyone is going to be surprised. And you can say that you did tell them that you would do it.

Ask me how I know.

Oh, fuck, is that an ADHD symptom?

Every day I find out more and more of me is just mental illness

Everything on the back burner, nothing on the front burner

Front burner's all burned out, and the replacement hasn't arrived yet. 😔

When people tell me about a project and say, "oh, this took me 5 years to do" it just makes me think, "damn, so it'd take me 10 years to get something twice as bad as this?"

The trick is to tell no one and still do nothing! You get to keep the friends and the anxiety!
