The cognitive dissonance is quite ironic isn't it?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Lmao fuck, I was reading from top to bottom

They put that shit in their TOS?? Fucking dumbasses

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah I feel like their TOS update banned discussions/promotions of meat eating but I am not sure they realise that.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Holy shit actual facts.

I've avoiding arguing about this because I'll just be drowned out but gotta say it's worn on me the amount of people calling us hiltlarian dictators because we gasp want to let vegans post vegan shit without constantly having to defend themselves.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I can imagine. Solidarity.

Thanks comrade, mad appreciation for the nice server you run here. I've found some really interesting reading thanks to the users and you seem to have a great culture.

Rooki is such a pest across so many different communities...

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

Real big "I'm Important Because I'm A Moderator" vibes from that guy

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except B12 / cobalamin.

B12 is a ass of a nutrient. It doesn't even get absorbed properly.

But it's also availible in liquid form. So there's that - and tastes kinda nice too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You probably had bad luck with the manufacturer and what you're tasting is other substances. Pills have no issue, and liquid form seems like a weird way to get it orally. If you're referring to injections, sure.

B12 is always absorbed in tiny amounts orally, whatever or whoever you are eating.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nono, I'm refering to the properties of B12 itself.

Its oral absorption is just very poor. Apparently only ~1%. So the doses must be immense. But humans only need miniscule amounts. The solution I use has 20,000% MRV. And most supplements have insanely high doses to solve this problem.

On the other hand: B12 is also available through dairy products or in egg-based foods. So it's usually only a problem if one is completly vegan and, as stated, easily subverted.

But you have to be aware of it. Because it's not "always absorbed in tiny amounts" just because you eat something. To quote Wikipedia:

Vitamin B12 is […] the only vitamin that must be sourced from animal-derived foods or supplements.

Also, cool hack:
It's also bright red and can color drinks. That's cool.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There's a lot more to read about it than Wikipedia. The animal sourcing is unreliable too, those farm animals don't make it, they get it from being outside and eating from the soil and drinking from various natural water sources. That doesn't apply to most animal-based food products as those come from factory farms, which is why they supplement, usually as multivitamins. Those who aren't eating a plant-based diet are essentially consuming second-hand supplements, along with second-hand amino-acids, second-hand lipids, second-hand calories. And B12 deficiency is pretty big in many human populations, especially among older adults. Everyone should be supplementing, really. You should stop making it sound like it's difficult or disgusting, it isn't.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I'm really sorry but that's straight up misinformation.

B12 is synthesized by certain bacteria. Plants do not create B12. Water does not somehow randomly contain B12. It's ONLY synthesized by bacteria.

I'm not even saying it's disgusting. I say it's easy to supplement. I'm not sure what's going on, but there seems to be a wild misunderstanding.

If Wikipedia is not for you, here's a random paper: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29216732 Please. It's not in water. It's not in dirt or floats around in outside air. I'm not saying it's disgusting. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm just saying it has to be considered and vegans are more at risk in this particular way, that's easily treatable.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but you certainly have a lot more reading to do. You have a first year student's understanding of the issue.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks for the summary! I didn't hear about these events at all...

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm too old for meta drama. Turn [email protected] into a read-only group with automated posts by a mod and locking. Let them downvote and move on.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm certainly trying to deprecate this connection to Lemmy.world.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks for the summary. It's been a shame it seems nobody cares about what happened, because nearly everyone on lemmy hates vegans. The community on lemmy world is in a weird spot right now and I don't see it lasting much longer. I'll recommend anyone still on that community to check this one out (among others) as a replacement in an upcoming post.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Thank you for advocating for yourself and others. You and your friends are welcome here.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Could you append this to your post? This is the latest update from us

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Thanks! Anyone who wants to add to the chronology can send me links in my replies.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It may be worth adding the new "Proposal for a weekly AskVegans sticky post" from [email protected], as it says there's a new moderator and implies that the community is not getting locked. The new lemmy.zip server update also dedicated a paragraph to the "fediverse moderation issues/drama", with the admin in the comments confirming it's in reference to the "vegan thread".

Nice! Also of note may be the comments by the main Lemmy developer Dessalines, and by the lemmy.dbzer0.com owner. Perhaps in brackets after the "future" post, unless individual comments by notable people are out of scope.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Adding significant comment references might make the chronology too cluttered, I'll hold off adding them for now. I'm glad you linked them so people who want more detail can find it in the comments.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Fair enough! It's a long read even with the existing posts in place.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Is this kind of behavior by the admin normal and accepted on lemmy?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

No, they made a post about it

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

I would recommend treating it as normal. In the end, those who pay for and operate the servers make the rules.
