So, my child (nearly 3 years old) is music crazy. As odd as this may be (maybe not), her four favorite things in this world are The Beatles, Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson.

It occurred to me that she doesn’t have any experience with religious iconography, but she loves the Heart Shaped Box video.

So I thought, for fun, let’s show her a picture of a cross and ask her what it is.

“NIRVANA! It’s Nirvana!” (Forvana actually).

I’ve been laughing my ass off.

I have raised multiple children from two generations now and none of them have had the burden of religion. Thank…god? :p

When my daughter was six, she said to her very religious grandmother, "grandma, when I stay at your house on the weekend, I don't want to go to church with you because I don't really believe in god." Her grandmother's a really sweet lady, and the most open-minded evangelical I've ever met, so she was fine with that. We just didn't have her stay over so she'd be there on a Sunday morning from then on.

Cut to a couple of weeks ago and my now 14-year-old daughter apparently was talking to her grandmother about book banning and Louisiana forcing school classrooms to display the 10 commandments. We told her those were probably not the best subjects to talk to her grandmother about, but her grandmother later told my mom that she thinks my daughter is really smart.

“So sweetheart, what do you do if Daddy gets cancer?”

“I eat it when it turns black.”

“Good girl.”

I’m not sure about the Beatles. Only thing I can really say is that my grandmother was from Pasadena, drove like a madwoman and was indeed quite little.

I wouldn’t call her a lady, though. She was the first person I ever heard swearing. She worked in a hospital billing department and called up a surgeon who was insisting on high bills. She bitched him out until he dropped his rates to something “reasonable”.
