It is an amazing movie in all regards but most of all technical. No wonder people think Kubric faked the moonlanding after watching a movie like this. Just magical!

It's honestly incredible that this movie was made in 1968 and had zero digital effects. Regardless of the plot it is a masterpiece of filmmaking.

Yes. Whenever I watch it, I’m astounded by how well the effects hold up. I can hardly believe that I’m looking at a film that’s over fifty years old.

If there was ever a movie ahead of it's time it's this one...

Although some of the other older films that I would say were ahead of their time as well are:

  • Manchurian Candidate (the Original one)
  • Night of the Hunter
  • The Innocents (the Original one)

They aren't sci-fi but are movies that really stick out to me (Manchurian Candidate is a tiny bit sci fi)

Somehow despite not being horror this movie nearly scared the crap out of me when I was younger. There was an sense of suspense that just had me really on edge by the end

My fiance and I had the same feeling. The music and the emptiness of space created anxiety - ans I loved it!

GOOD. and do you now understand why people complain about modern cinema? I like intermissions, as relevant as they are... Laurence of Arabia would be my next epic movie suggestion. *edit: this is a SciFi comm. I understand. Hands up for film that last over 90min.

The book is pretty cool too. It was written by Arthur C. Clark.

It's definately a classic. The sequel is good too.

Yes! 2010: the year we make contact (or something). It's pretty good, different director.
