(I don't know where else to post, maybe someone here can help, and Neocities is open source...)

I want to create a site on Neocities. I fill out the signup form, solve the captcha, but when I click the "Create My Site" button, nothing happens. I click it again, and after a delay it starts loading something, but then just says "The captcha was not valid, please try again."

This happens regardless of the browser, machine or IP address I'm using.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem, and hopefully how to solve it? Is it just me or does anyone else have the same issue? I've sent an email to the admins two days ago, but still have gotten no reply, and I can find no info on this elsewhere online.

EDIT (20-8-2024): It's working now, probably they fixed it, woo! :D

You can always try the 'Contact' form on the site, it's not likely anyone here is going to be able to give you good advice

I know, as I've said, I've sent them an email through that form two days ago but have still gotten no response.

2 days ago was Friday, it's likely they don't work the weekends.

Could be so, though it doesn't look like a site where the devs have a fixed time schedule. (Not that I know much about managing a website, just my impression.)

Are you on a VPN? Sometimes that screws with CAPTCHA

Nope. I actually tried using a proxy and it got rejected for that very reason (with a different message), whereas two normal IPs had the problem described in OP.

Have you tried running Wireshark or something similar so you can see what's happening on the back-end?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

No, I have no idea what that is and I suspect I won't be able to figure it out, but I can give it a try.

My suspicion was correct, I can't figure it out.

This wouldn't be a tool for wireshark. It could be a tool for the browser dev tools though. With it you can see every time a website tries to make a connection out, what data is submitted, and what the response is. Unfortunately, if you don't understand how http works, it might be all Greek.
