Unlimited venture capital money for 20 years have allowed social media companies to basically do whatever they want without listening to their user base. It was good when they were trying to grow the user base. But now that they are trying to squeeze every dollar out, we're seeing the dark side.

Contrast this with old school media. They are mature and must turn a profit through their advertising. And they are absolutely terrified. Every TV show involves consultants who obsess over tiny details that could make the difference of half a ratings point. They know that if they scare the audience away, they go out of business.

Eventually the tech companies will reach the same level of maturity, but we're not there yet.

And the worse thing is, because the internet is so centralized now (dominated by just a few companies) people have almost nowhere to go back to. The worst thing tho, is how a lot of people simply don't care. They would rather keep the very slight convenience they have over getting rid of these corrupt companies.

Those who would trade essential liberty for convenience deserve neither.

What's the essential liberty here, shitposting?

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The essential liberty is being able to use a device you own how you choose to use it, and not the rules for its use being dictated remotely by a giant corporation.

See: Google's Web Environment Integrity proposal.

The thing is, like the person I was responding to was pointing out, most people don't give one shit and don't pay attention to moves like these, because they prefer the convenience over caring about lack of personal agency in the equation.

See also: Reddit API protest, which most redditors didn't give one fucking shit about.

You joke, but yes, shitposting would absolutely be included as an essential liberty in an open and free internet.

Our god given right.

Is this why most TV shows are trash now?

What does this post even mean

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Guy Fawkes cums for social media platforms

We live in a society

Bottom text

I don't agree with what you said

but I will defend your right to say it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It basically means that social medias like lemmy and 4chan are the antithesis of other centralized sites like reddit, X and the like.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

4chan being the cesspool of "oh fuck, don't say or do that" type social media.

A Guy Fawkes mask. What year is it? Are we raiding Scientology again?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Oh I hope we're raiding Scientology again.

[–] TheFogan 4 points 1 year ago

I wish, has 4chan ever grown back to being a power to the people, rather than a Russian/MAGA group.

I remember my Guy Fawkes phase. I thought I was hot shit.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Still got the mask. You know that guy was catholic? I was surprised to find myself aligned with a religious fanatic.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't think most people's favorite thing about him was that he was Catholic, I believe there was other reasons he was made popular.

God - all of my friends were insufferable for years after v for vendetta came out.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How? Could you explain. I’m curious

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Basically saying that lemmy and 4chan are the rivals of popular social media sites like reddit and X in terms of their policies and philosophies. The meme likens lemmy and 4chan to Guy Fawkes and V.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

More V than fawkes, I would say. Pretty sure anonymous' usage of the persona is more inline with the anti fascist rhetoric of v than the theocratic ideology of fawkes.
