I'd take a look at postmarketOS instead
Linux
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

How's it going so far? Any chance to use it as daily driver?
I don't use it. OnePlus 6s are as rare as Apple IIs here lol. I would love to try though. From what I know it has some issues that depend on the DE you choose. There aren't many apps and unfortunately landscape mode didn't seem to be implemented the last time I checked so using unoptimized apps is not easy. But also reviewers say that it's smooth and even battery life is decent (at least on GNOME Mobile) so it's going quite well for the OS I think. You probably can use it as daily driver if you only need a terminal, a browser and basic productivity apps (clock, calendar and notes) but it's constantly updating so new bugs may appear all the time
Its far more advanced by now. I use fluffychat for matrix communication, landscape mode works very well, I‘m working on porting bitwarden to pmos rn but its gonna take more time or someone else to help.
A litany of apps is already working on pmos and they’re becoming more numerous every day. Still, it is a community effort so feel obligated to contribute (as you should with every program not selling your data).
Well I can't contribute in any way except telling more people about the program
Good you say it out loud. That way you and others can be shown that this is a false assumption.
Ways to contribute but not limited to:
- Donate money so people can produce foss instead of for profit/proprietary crap
- Help translate
- write wikis or documentation
- follow discussions on the project forum/website
- spread articles/news about the project
Obviously, telling others about it is still helping and valid. But saying you cant contribute any other way seems unlikely.
Thanks for bringing it up.
Ok now it's time to explain what I meant I guess.
-
I earn around $100 a month so donating is not even considered
-
I don't understand the translation software. I think running a space shuttle is easier
-
I don't know English and any language well enough to write it and even if I did, I'm not that advanced to speak about initramfs issues or pretty much anything backend-related
-
That will just add spam in my inbox and following just to make the forum have a higher number of subscribers is kinda unethical and can even violate its terms and conditions
-
Now that is something I probably can do... if I take 10x the normal doze of sedatives because I'm autistic
In conclusion, when I say I can't contribute, I mean it and I don't mean that idk how to contribute
I‘m autistic as well so please feel relate to on that front.
- thats rough.
- you dont need to understand translation software. Your assumption (again) is that you do. I dont understand translation software either. Translating for foss often means reading a sentence and writing it down in your mother tongue
- you are writing it in pretty flawless fashion so whatever you‘re talking about is another false assumption. Even if you use a translation app it doesnt show at all
- thats what throwaway email accounts are for. Nobody is saying sign up and forget it. I‘m saying help others who use the software and report your own bugs.
- cant comment on sedatives since I dont use any but I get the notion that people are hard to deal with.
In conclusion, we autistic people tend to get stuck in our ways more often and need to rethink our approach to things so we can live without self imposed, unnecessary restrictions.
Have a good one.

Not only that but also now I'm close to doing something that I can't tell because it's against Lemmy's terms of service. I think you get what it is. I use spending all my money and even more as help to keep myself in a biologically functional state
-
What I meant about translation software is the systems that open-source projects use to host croudsourced translation (I can't remember the names sorry). I tried opening it a few times and I can tell you that the US Space Shuttle's cockpit is easier to understand and navigate than the software. It at least has labels beneath the controls
-
I'm writing flawlessly only in very specific cases that were trained for an extensive period of time are not helpful for serious scientific texts unfortunately. Often I don't write what I can't write well and just lie instead of trying to explain my real position (because that way I can use words and phrases I know) so that's why my language looks flawless. Also, since I don't speak my mother tongue almost at all for more than a year now (I don't have a life offline), its knowledge has become greatly damaged as well
-
I don't really want to get banned from e-mail providers and idk any temporary e-mail services that work in my country (idk how to use a good VPN)
-
Basically for me doing most of the social things feels like walking naked in a mall. It's impossible to do when sober. Being on forums doesn't count for some reason
In conclusion, I would highly recommend you to pay more attention at paragraph 1 and refrain from trying to change anything since it may result in digital disciplinary trouble for both you and me.
Whatever you think mate. I stand by my initial statement. I can relate to the inflexibility of your thoughts because its a thing I often struggle with as well. I wont refrain from anything though as you can probably imagine. Have a good one.
Its doable I guess but you will have to check and see if the stuff you need works well enough. If you can compromise, you will likely get it working. Bonus points if you can donate or contribute. I contribute. My OP6 works very well but I‘m still transitioning.
No, that mobile OS is not ready, and probably won't ever be. I have it installed on an OnePlusOne, it's just alpha. Postmarket OS is much better and further along, but still not good for day to day usage. I eventually ended up on Murena e/OS, which is based on a more private, totally de-googled version of LineageOS (which is Android).
As already mentioned, postmarketOS is probably closest to what you want for an open source android replacement, though it’s still not 100% there if you’re looking for a perfect alternative.
Personally I’m going to try it out as a daily driver when I can get a cheap pixel 8 when the 9 comes out later this year
Its interesting how the postmarket os has firefox and thunderbird tweaked for the phone.
And it works insanely good on the OnePlus6. I‘m working on that rn. If you want „perfect“ without spending money (donating) or contributing, I suggest proprietary stuff though. Not because I believe its good. I just want to show people that „perfect“ is not a healthy demand.
I just randomly found a OnePlus with a community build of PostmarketOS (Alpine).
I would not use something based off Ubuntu, but the general Linux Desktop is either insecure (traditional apps) or too resource intensive for phones (flatpak).
Also the boot process is way less secure than on a Pixel with the separated Secure Element and all the verification mechanisms.
In general Android uses hardware encryption, profiles are seperately encrypted, and it uses an equivalent to the TPM for that. Many Linux distros are just catching up on that.
Updates can be equally stable and in the background when using rpm-ostree.
Idle battery life is worse. My old GrapheneOS phone that I use as an mp3 player lasts for 2 weeks.
Tons of Apps rely on Android libraries and Waydroid is very outdated currently. If they update to Android 14 and if you use a base OS with SELinux, the Android security model is intact. (The Android sandbox relies entirely on SELinux, without SELinux Apps can break your phone or invade it).
On Android you have the work profile, which allows you to run a set of isolated apps next to the others, apart from the normal App sandbox.
Android is pretty great and GrapheneOS is the best variant of it, if your priorities are
- Stability (reliability, not some weird Debian stuff)
- Fast updates, often faster than Googles or slightly behind (as they are no Google certified OS they dont get early access, UNLIKE Fairphone which still manages to not ship updates for months)
- Security, Privacy by core design
No
I did that exact thing and it is basically unusable. And that was before all network connectivity broke leaving it actually unusable. I also haven't been able to flash the normal rom back so it's basically a brick now.
0/10 would not recommend
Nope. Dead project barely kept alive by a few people for some reason.
The recent progress on VoLTE and 5G and all the recent apps being released for it say otherwise.
It's like two guys. Working on downstream of all things.
Find me a public code repository, a social , or some other cohesive piece of confirmation this is still in development recently, and I'll delete my comment.
Please don't delete your comment. I find it very annoying to follow a conversation when one party has deleted their half of correspondence. Here's a comment tgat suggests otherwise, seeing as they had a Stand on FOSDEM '24: https://forums.ubports.com/post/78315
An article about their changes in release cycle that suggests they're still updating it: https://ubports.com/blog/ubports-news-1/post/announcement-of-release-model-changes-3920 (More Specifically, the first paragraph under the "What will happen to the current Ubuntu Touch OTAs based on Ubuntu 20.04 suggests they will be working on releasing 24.04 when that happens.
So that's about the "still in development recently".
As for "only 2 guys" a quick look seems to suggest you're right.
Regardless, if I had to switch to or at least try Mobile Linux, I'd be going for Postmarket OS, Mobian or Droidian in that order of priority as Postmarket OS seems to be the most popular and well-maintained of them all while also being the most cool and featureful one (imo).
dead project
