Doesn't seem to make sense, shouldn't the file size be the only problem?

It's all about preference of admins. Just ask them what they're allowing.

What kind of image are you uploading to a lemmy instance that's eight meg?

Seems like a reasonable size limit for a modern phone camera picture.

none actually, I just noticed that some instances (lemmy.world I guess) allows images with a size up to 8MB, but usually they're a few KBs

No, playing a video is much CPU heavier then displaying an image.
