it kind of is, the amount of casual observers/critics that talk about "box-office bombs" and shit is too fucking high. do you own Disney stock? then why the fuck should you care whether Mr Iron Marvel Hulk III made 200mil or 300mil opening weekend?

and as a side note all the illiterate critics talking about that stuff also poisoned the well on the financial reporting---because a company suddenly taking a bunch of losses might be something to look out for---but none of these people know the first thing about hollywood accounting and are happy to declare things "flops" after a single weekend

oh remember when Blade Runner 2049 came out and the only thing cinema "journalists" (quotations as theres no such thing as niche journalism, the very idea of it greatly irritates mel lol) could talk about was the fact they film would surely lose money because it was so weird? God forbid a movie with a strong core and aesthetic, all movies should appeal to the broadest possible audience amirite, moneyyyyyyyy woooooo

kinda curious if you would expand on that. I 100% percent agree with the rest of your take, and most of my favorite media are the ones that completely dropped broad appeal to pursue their own odd style.

that is the way that media becomes influential in the short term

what relevancy does 'how many people are talking about this' have, critically? it's a good movie that lots of people watched, it's a good movie that didn't make too much of a splash---the critic watched it though, all they need to do is review the movie, not do haruspicy about it's future cultural weight and what the studios, executives, and production team are going to do about that sum of money they collected or failed to collect

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haruspex

In the religion of ancient Rome, a haruspex was a person trained to practise a form of divination called haruspicy, the inspection of the entrails of sacrificed animals, especially the livers of sacrificed sheep and poultry. Various ancient cultures of the Near East, such as the Babylonians, also read omens specifically from the liver, a practice also known by the Greek term hepatoscopy (also hepatomancy).

I've heard of the practice, but TIL the proper name for it.

There are a couple of haruspex in magic, but I thought it was just a word for "wizard". You draw a card when other creatures die, so it is even doing the thing, as well

I found out what the word meant when Hvomverguy did his Pathologic video
