I'm only two episodes in and the art style and action scenes are amazing and the protagonist is definitely a trans man out for revenge against his white womanizing colonizer father.

Blue Eye Samurai is indeed fucking amazing. I'm not so sure that Mizu is a trans man, though.

Whether or not they are supposed to be in the text there is a lot there that can be interpreted that way, to the point where after two episodes, I was like "okay this is definitely at least heavily implied even if by accident."

The chest binding, the fact there is never confusion over pronouns or Mizu expressing any femininity even in private, never removing the bindings even when bathing. I don't know it's a lot to be just a coincidence.

I agree to some extent, but she's intentionally posing as a man because she needs to be one to pursue her quest. I don't think Mizu is a trans man for the same reasons I don't think Mulan is a trans man.

Also, she definitely removes her chest bindings to bathe.

The big difference between Mizu and Mulan is that Mulan is very clear that her identity is as a woman, she is playing a masculine role and concealing her womanhood. Mizu on the other hand never does any if this, and infact seems incredibly uncomfortable when required to conform or deal with femaleness; often reacting violently to people trying to gender him as female. Like I don't want to spoiler stuff here but the midway flashback arc is basically a trans coming out story in miniature.

I don't think the show will ever come down hard on trans guy, but Mizu is definitely trans coded. At every point in the show where Mizu has the choice to let people refer to him as female he violently opposes it, excepting one bit that I read as clearly going into the closet; and it only gets more transy as that arc ends.

This is exactly my take as well. At LEAST it is Trans coded but it read pretty explicitly to me as a definitely 100 percent cis guy I swear...
