Is there an alternative to windows VMs?
I have tried hyperv but it genuinely sucks just like every Microsoft product. QEMU/KVM, which is a type 1 hypervisor, is really nice tho.
Windows host or Windows guest?
Assuming you mean hyper-v, I can't recommend proxmox enough.
