Just pulled up a map of downtown to search for the intersection my budget and convenient lodging for a week in Amsterdam. The wife is a huge history nut and I mostly like looking at the architecture. No clubbing, nothing stronger than beer, no threesomes. Roughing it, when we're on vacay as a couple, is defined as a "major flag hotel that doesn't have 24 hour room service." We'd like to explore as much as possible on foot (/public transportation). We're totally down for a boutique apartment, though, if one comes up.

Anyone have a favorite semi-posh location that can be had for <$200 night in the shoulder season (October-ish).

Feel free to ask in https://kbin.social/m/Amsterdam

But in lieu to that; for a cost effective option, get somewhere on a metro line - anywhere on the Amsterdam metro or tram will be close enough to get around & to the museums (most of which are conveniently situated at Museumplein (MuseumSquare).

So low budget would be around Sloterdijk, high budget would be somewhere on the inner Canals (Singel, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, Prinsengracht).

Heck, if you stay very central in neighbouring Utrecht, you can get a 20min train into Amsterdam Centraal or Zuid (South) and not be inconvenienced too much.

On balance, if budget allows, stay in Zuid/Buitenveldert in a basic hotel and either cycle or catch the tram up.

Remember: no part of amsterdam is unsafe (by any standard) & all is well connected by public transport (just check google maps).

Also remember: Amsterdam is popular with tourists all year round, so hotels are relatively dear & AirBnB’s are limited (for housing stock reasons).

Great info! I've never been, and the wife was hustled though on a high school tour a few years ago (as a chaperone).

I'm always a bit hesitant to ask in a locals sub/community/magazine, as some are intolerant of tourist posts, esp in popular destinations. I'll keep that magazine in mind as we work through the details of our stay.

Your hesitancy is well appreciated. That’s why we have a pinned Question & Answer post though 😅
