Ich hab das Gefühl, die Sympathie geht ein Stück weiter. Ein Volk, dem es seit Jahrzehnten gelingt, ausländische Mächte abzuwehren und als eine Art "Insel" ihre konservativen religiösen und ethnischen Vorstellungen umsetzt.

Aber die Formulierung passt! Das hat auf alle Fälle mit Glauben zu tun.
