It's called "disposing of evidence". The only reason for him to get rid of the gun is because he doesn't want to be found with that gun.
Maybe he took the gun back when he got out. In that case it might have just been him wanting the cab driver to have a gun to protect them, and not wanting to be prosecuted for being drunk and shooting if something were to happen.
