Dolphin is good but it needs a lot of configuration to get it right. Their default settings are a weird choice, like missing location bar, no folder up button etc.

Ask ten people what good defaults would be and you'll get ten very different responses. This is exactly why Dolphin, and Plasma in general, are so easy to tweak to your ideal.

i think that might be distro dependant? i'm not sure, i just bring my dotfiles with me; but i thought at least debian has an up button by default

also to be honest i don't mind non-editable location by default: if my hands are already on the keyboard to type, i'll just press f6 and it immediately becomes editable

It is editable by default... Once you click on it, it turns into a normal text field

if you click on it or focus it in any way - it's the same as windows explorer; and it is the best way of doing it i think. but i meant that by default it's a series of buttons, whereas some file managers default to (and dolphin has the option of) always showing a textbox there

i wish there was an option to show the .. folder, though. that's the only feature i miss in dolphin
