We have become an “immediate, right now” society and as a result the general populace has no concept of time scale for things like manufacturing, food production, etc. None of this shit happens overnight, and most manufacturers and producers will try slightly overproduce or keep a minimum of excess supplies on hand in case of a minor disruption to supply lines - but once that handful of emergency supplies or parts is gone? THAT is when you find out how absolutely fucked you are."
