The court ruling was actually more narrow than the headline lets on.
This case has a mix of plaintiffs, some non profit orgs, and some labor unions that represent affected workers.
When the lower court judge made the injunction, he looked at one of the non profits, decided they had standing to sue, and then he didn't have to decide on the standing of the rest of the plaintiffs. This kind of short circuit evaluation happens all the time in judicial decision making.
Anyway, the supreme court reversed the standing decision for the non profit orgs. The ruling is that they don't have enough of an "injury" to sue over the fired workers. But the labor unions are still fair game, and common sense suggests that they have much better standing, because their workers are losing jobs.
So the lower court judge is already in the process of amending his injunction to award to the unions and not the non profits. That should be ready to appeal to the supreme court soon.
