They might even be additional database resources on reddit, which they didn't bother to implement into old.reddit.
It all depends on how reddit was coded from the beginning, how they prepared everything for expansion and lastly how they ended up implementing all the things that were added to the codebase over the years.
This inconsistency is a little indicator of a codebase i would be happy to never have to lay my eyes upon.
This makes me think of websites like Walgreens mobile site where it loads the old design first then updates to the new design lol.
