i hate to inform you that most of the people who vote for the democratic party are significantly more centrist than you and me. They really don't care, as long as it isn't the republican voter base, i'm sure they have gripes, we all do, but they probably just don't care as much. That's why they consistently manage such high, but not winning turnout numbers. They mobilize the majority of their base, not the majority of their base, and anybody else that they can.
