It was the βstarts of swimming strokes. So buttter is the start of butterfly stroke, freestyle stroke, etc.I see. Must have misread the name. Although I thought the other 3 were written separate.

No, the connection today was "starts of swimming strokes".So they had breast[stroke], butter[fly], free[style], and back[stroke].
Although interestingly, all of these except butterfly are often shortened to the word as it appeared in the puzzle. Butterfly gets shortened to "fly".
