First one! Cleaning shoes. You appear to be the first person to guess without cheating!
Ahh I was close in my thinking. I've seen similar things for cleaning dog paws when they come in from the mud.
That was my first thought too, but then I thought, "no that's too stupid." I had forgotten that stupid is a bottomless pit.
