Isn't this a real service people provide?. Like when releasing doves or other birds at a funeral or wedding, they are trained to fly back to the owners, so they are able to lease them out many times over

Yes, kind of. Homing pigeons will naturally fly back home, training them just involves releasing them further and further away.
