I wanted to post this here since I want to help as much as I can in my own way to people coming here for the first time. I hope it is useful and helpful! I tried to assume low knowledge with the Fediverse in my responses which I collected here from a different post and assembled into a single article....

Graphics and Performance

  • Reduced stutters when the upscale filter was set to FSR or NIS under high GPU load.
  • Fixed an issue regarding frame-pacing and stutter, especially affecting some external displays.
  • Fixed display sometimes getting stuck at 60Hz after returning from sleep on the Steam UI.
  • Fixed an issue where a core could be stuck at 100% CPU if a game's window closed in an unclean way.

Note: This update is for the Steam Deck Preview channel, and includes new features that are still being tested. You can opt into this in Settings > System > System Update Channel. General Fixed an issue where modifying settings in the desktop partition manager could prevent the SD card from being mounted and visible in Steam Fixed an issue in desktop mode where dropping a folder on the desktop would erroneously create a shortcut for every item within the folder.

This is based off a tutorial I made for Mupen64 Plus on an Android based handheld, but since I got a steam deck, I wanted to get it working in Retroarch as well.

NOTE: This tutorial uses Retroarch installed via EmuDeck.


Step 1: Prepare the Games

First you need to change some in-game settings in both games. Specifically the control scheme and aspect ratios.

In Perfect Dark
Make your save file, then in the pause menu, scroll to Options > Video

  • Set "Ratio" to 16:9.
  • Turn on Hi-Res if you need to.
    (Back to Options) > Control
  • Set Control Style to "2.4 (Two-Handed)"
  • Reverse Pitch: [OFF]

In GoldenEye 007
(You actually need to start a mission and bring up the pause menu.)

  • In the third tab, change control style to "2.4 Goodhead"
  • In the next tab over, set Look Up/Down to "Upright"
  • Further down in the same tab, change Ratio to 16:9

Step 2: Switching to Widescreen

(This assumes you set 3D games to "4:3" from EmuDeck. I'm not sure what effect having that already set to "16:9" will have on this process. However, if it is a problem, you can probably just skip this section and go straight to the next one for controls.)

While in either game, hold the select button and press Y to bring up the in-game Retroarch menu.

Navigate to Settings > Video > Scaling.

  • Change Aspect Ratio to 16:9, or 16:10 if you want to fill in a little more screen and don't mind a little vertical stretching.

Step 3: Remap the Controls

(Don't worry about these changes. We will save them to their own profile so they won't mess with other games.)

Go to Settings > Input > RetroPad Binds > Port 2 Controls.

  • Change the Device Index to "Steam Virtual Gamepad" (Or otherwise the same controller as Port 1).

Navigate to Quick Menu > Controls > Port 1 Controls

  • Disable the R2 button by switching it to "---".
  • Disable all four Left Analog functions as well.
  • Remap all Right Analog functions from "C Button" mappings to their equivalent "Control Stick" mappings. (For example, change "Right Analog Y- (Up), Axis -3" from "C Buttons Y -" to "Control Stick Y -", then do the same for the rest.)

Exit and switch to Port 2 Controls

  • Disable L2 Button
  • Change R2 Button to "Z Trigger"
  • Disable all Right Analog functions.

Step 4: Save Your Settings

Exit Port 1 Controls and go into Manage Remap Files

  • Select "Save Remap File As" and give it a name you'll recognize. (This is to make setting up the controls in the other game faster. I chose the name "goldendark".)
  • Next, select "Save Game Remap File".

Navigate back to Quick Menu > Overrides

  • Select "Save Game Overrides"

Step 5: Setup the other game using your saved configurations.

Launch the other game & open up the Retroarch quick menu.

Navigate to Quick Menu > Controls > Manage Remap Files

  • Select "Load Remap File" and choose the one you created. (goldendark.rmp for me.)
  • Select "Save Game Remap File".

Navigate to Settings > Video > Scaling

  • Change "Aspect Ratio" to 16:9 (or 16:10).

Navigate back to Quick Menu > Overrides

  • Select "Save Game Overrides"

There you have it. Be sure to get retroachievements up and going as well, and have fun in your espionage shenanigans.

I’ve started to play more terraria and was wondering if anyone knows if you can host a terraria server via the steam deck?

It goes from November 21st to the 28th.

For me personally, I'll probably get Tunic, The Stanley Parable, and a few others from my wishlist.

If you are like me you want to be able to adjust your logitec/steelseries/asus (among other) mouse settings within the deck itself while in desktop mode.

There's a great utility for doing this called libratbag. It can not be packaged as a flatpack so you will have to install it manually with Pacman. Due to the nature of how the deck's os is configured, you will have to redo this every time your deck updates, but it's super simple! You will need to have set a sudo password to do this, so if you have not done that go ahead and get that out of the way.

Instructions:

Launch Konsole

sudo steamos-readonly disable sudo pacman -S libratbag sudo pacman-key --init sudo pacman -Syy sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux sudo steamos-readonly enable

Congratulations! Libratbag is now installed!

The next step is to install a GUI to control libratbag, this program is called piper. Luckily this is a flatpack, and available in the discover app located on the toolbar while in desktop mode. Just search for piper there and install it. This process will not need to be repeated after each update. After it installs launch it and you are free to adjust your mouse's settings!

Recently at the Tokyo Game Show Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais spoke to CNBC about PC gaming and Steam Deck, here's what was said during the interview.

  • When talking about the power of SteamOS - "we would like to work with other hardware manufacturers, so they can adopt SteamOS in the future".
  • On VR: "for Steam Deck we don't really have a VR story to it, but it's definitely something we want to explore more in the future".
  • For the future: "we're not really seeing growth stop after COVID, so for us it's really important to keep working on the current version of the Steam Deck, put together software updates we just released a big SteamOS 3.5 update that's added new features we're going to keep doing that - but also work on the hardware side supply chain, retail presence, work with distributors to get the Deck available worldwide and expand its audience so we're going to be focusing on that short term - in the future we're looking at the PC market and where technology is going and see if there's any interesting opportunities there".
  • When asked about console cycles, games being higher-end and Steam Deck upgrades: "right now we're looking at this performance target that we have as a stable target for a couple years, we think that it's a pretty sweet spot in terms of being able to play all the experiences from this new generation and so far the new releases coming out have been great experiences on Steam Deck. We're working with developers on future releases and we're monitoring the feedback there but so far it's been pretty good on the horsepower front".

Even though Valve only just recently put SteamOS 3.5 into preview for Steam Deck, they're not done with improvements elsewhere with a new Beta Client release doing a bit of a Gyro overhaul to the Mouse mode.

All three Steam Deck models have joined Steam's 20th Anniversary sale, marking the third time Valve's handheld PCs have gone on sale—the first was back in March, and the second during the Steam Summer Sale a few months ago.

It's the same discount as last time: 20% off the 512GB version, which brings it to $519.20 ($129.80 off). That's the same price as one of Valve's certified refurbished 512GB Steam Decks, which are sold out at the moment. The 256GB and 64GB versions have received smaller 15% and 10% discounts for this sale, respectively.

Display

  • The default color rendering for Steam Deck has been adjusted to emulate the sRGB color gamut, resulting in a slightly warmer and more vibrant color appearance.
  • Added Settings -> Adjust Display Colors, to tune the display's Color Vibrancy and Color Temperature. The settings can be tuned with a preview of a test image (above), or with your running game.
  • Native: The native display color appearance (the color rendering for Steam Deck prior to this update).
  • sRGB: Emulate the sRGB primaries, in a smooth manner that does not introduce gradient clipping.
  • Boosted: Emulate a wider-gamut display appearance, resulting in increased apparent vibrance. May result in gradient clipping.
  • HDR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the external display.
  • VRR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the USB-C adapter.
  • Reworked Quick-Access scaling settings to separate scaling from filtering. Added Stretch and Zoom scaling as new options to handle different aspect ratios.
  • Fixed touchscreen orientation while external display is connected.
  • Compositing is now avoided in additional scenarios, reducing latency and stutter in situation with multiple overlays on screen.
  • Improved latency in certain situations where the application renders slower than the display's refresh rate.

General

  • Fixed an issue where certain workloads would exhibit severe CPU performance issues unless SMT was manually disabled.
  • External storage devices are now auto-mounted when connected to Steam Deck. To format or manage storage devices use the new device management interface in Settings->Storage.
  • Updated graphics drivers, with many performance and functionality improvements. Improved performance for Starfield. Fixed viewmodel corruption in Amnesia: The Bunker and launch failures for Immortals of Aveum and Kaiju-A-GoGo.
  • Improved Bluetooth connection stability, especially with multiple controllers
  • Slightly improved sleep resume speed
  • Implemented switching between controller bindings and mouse/keyboard desktop bindings by long-pressing Options in the Linux hid-steam driver, to match Steam's default Desktop configuration.
  • Improved fade transitions between applications.
  • The contents of the performance overlay can now be customized by creating a ~/.config/MangoHud/presets.conf configuration file.
  • Fixed a bug where some games could appear stretched if their window size didn't match their swapchain size (eg. Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4)
  • Fixed Disgaea PC needing to be tapped on before input works
  • Fixed physical dimensions reported to games, fixing some issues with an incorrect aspect ratio sometimes being detected (eg. Returnal)
  • Worked around a problem where Allow Tearing could cause heavy stuttering if the Performance Overlay or other overlays appeared on screen. Tearing is now impossible in such situations, and the Performance Overlay should be disabled for best results.
  • Fixed a problem where keyboard input would not be detected in Overwatch 2
  • Controller firmware: fixed an issue where some thumbstick touch sensors would lose touch periodically

Firmware 116

  • Added voltage offset settings.
  • Improved robustness of the Firmware Settings Reset chord (Volume Down + Quick-Access + Power) against some boot hang scenarios.
  • Fixed a rare issue that would set the processor TDP limit too low causing CPU and GPU frequencies to be stuck at 400 MHz and 200 MHz respectively.
  • Fixed an issue when the charging light would turn back on when plugged in for a while after fully charged.
  • Updated Arch Linux Base
  • This update pulls in newer performance, security and stability fixes for the underlying packages that are the foundation for SteamOS
  • Most notably, this includes recent changes to KDE Plasma, Steam Deck's Desktop Mode. Full notes on these updates can be found on KDE's website here. Here are a few of the highlights:

We have just shipped an updated Steam Deck Client to the Stable (default) channel.

General

  • Added support for Indonesian language.
  • Fixed the "Processing Shaders" dialog flashing when launching a game.
  • Fixed manual GPU clocks not getting applied when launching a game.
  • Fixed screenshot notifications not showing up when a screenshot is taken.
  • Fixed empty folders not being re-created when verifying a game installation.
  • Fixed a case where a Library Folder could be forgotten when a drive was unplugged from the system.
  • Fixed a case where non-steam games could disappear from the library.
  • Fixed issue where some steam:// protocol handlers were not handled correctly due to case sensitivity. Example: steam://url/communityfilepage/<ugcid> was not working correctly.
  • Fixed issue with steam://connect/<gameserver ip>:<game server port>/<optional password> was not handled.
  • Fixed a case where the System Report upload process would proclaim success even though the operation failed.
  • Added a "Save To Desktop" option to the System Report dialog.
  • Fixed issue where the virtual keyboard was not showing when requested by the game in game mode.
  • Fixed a case where the user would be prompted to install an OS update for a second time after switching between game mode and desktop mode.

Steam Input

  • Fixed touchpad input when using the Victrix and Qanba PS4/PS5 arcade sticks
  • Reduced lag when switching between pages in the "Edit Layout" view for configurations with large numbers of action sets/layers/mode-shifts
  • Fixed the DualSense firmware update dialog from popping up when the controller was connected over Bluetooth and already up to date
  • Added the ability to bind Steam Input API trigger actions to button inputs.

Steam Cloud

  • Fixed a case where Steam Cloud saves could be synced to a computer that did not have the game installed if the game was available for streaming from another PC.

Remote Play

  • Fixed controller buttons being stuck down.
  • Added support for 4K high quality streaming presets.
  • Fixed occasional crash directly launching a game from the Steam Link UI.
  • Fixed device authorization dialog not showing if Steam Link connects while Steam is starting up.

Library

  • Fixed some screenshot thumbnails on the activity feed not being properly obscured when marked as spoiler.

Desktop Mode

  • Allow the settings window to be resized.
  • Improved reliability of Back button.
  • Adjusted the low battery notification for laptops/handheld PCs to only fire in the overlay or the main BPM window.
  • Fixed windows being able to set minimum sizes larger than their display dimensions.
  • Fixed clicking "Play Game" links in event news causing client popup windows to close.
  • steamwebhelper support dialog is now shown if the main client window cannot be created at startup.
  • Fixed switching from fullscreen to windowed mode when a full-screen video is dismissed.
  • Fixed notifications stealing focus when shown in overlay.
  • Fixed overlay freezing when a file dialog is shown.
  • The overlay tabbed browser will now wait until the overlay has been activated for the first time before restoring saved tabs.
  • Added an option to In Game settings that allows toggling whether overlay browser tabs will be restored when starting a game.

Hi everybody,
A few months back I bought the Wichter III complete edition in a steam sale. I finally have time to play it and now it won't launch. Not on my steam deck and not on my Fedora PC. On PC it is just stuck saying "is beeing started" right next to the play button. On my steam deck it is stuck on a blackscreen with a steam loading symbol...

Has anyone else had these problems?
