hello Portland folks, I am attending a conference in downtown Portland OR in late October. I'm staying an extra day to get some hiking done. My plan is to go to the airport and rent a cheap car, go to wherever you recommend for some good day hiking, and return to the airport for a late (9 pm) flight out. Any suggestions? any places to avoid?

A solar eclipse will soon grace the skies over the Americas. On Saturday, October 14, 2023, the Moon will cross in front of the Sun, covering at most 90% of it — the remaining 10% will appear as a blazing “ring of fire” around the Moon’s black silhouette.

Vacancy taxes here should be painfully high here. $3m property vacant for years? Should be paying about $300k/yr in vacancy taxes.

I'll reiterate: Mingus Mapps is a fucking liar. He's also terrible at being PBOT commissioner. We want open data and we want it yesterday. I want to see report metrics. I want to see the PBOT budgets for their teams, their headcount allocation and how they are planning work as well as dealing with emergency problems (eg reports).

Whether you like basketball or not, the Damian Lillard trade today sees Portland lose a stalwart of class, low drama and accountability in a media age of pithy, immature sound bytes end egomaniacs. Personally wish the guy all the best in Milwaukee and will be rooting for the Bucks in the east!

I rewatched an old but good video on the war on drugs. And it reminded me, that tlaw enforcement is AT BEST 1 step ahead of some criminals. But that the criminal element is always rapidly adapting, and the best thing we can do against drugs and crime is to focus on the demand side.

We legalized the drugs, but didn't do the more important half of that solution, treatment and services for the drug users.

So, why aren't we doing more? Who dropped the ball? Are we doomed to just keep throwing more law enforcement at the problem?

Stores in question:

Portland Galleria: 939 SW Morrison St.
Portland Powell: 3031 SE Powell Blvd.
Portland Hollywood: 4030 NE Halsey St.

So Galleria, the one by the Hollywood MAX stop, aaand... 30th and Powell? No idea there was even one there...

These man children playing with their toys and what is the punishment, only 5 years? The victim's child, who will now be 7 has no mother for the rest of his life.

Here is the original story of the homicide https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/2023/09/street-racer-gets-5-year-prison-sentence-in-crash-that-killed-26-year-old-woman-waiting-at-portland-bus-stop.html

You'd get 5 years for trying to hold up a plaid pantry and not hurting anyone, but plow through a bus stop at godknowshowfast while street racing and cream a young mother and alter her child's life forever? 5 years. Appalling.

The settlement avoids a jury trial that would have started next week.

Former Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has accepted $680,000 from the city’s police union and two officers to settle claims that officers shared information that falsely implicated her of committing a hit-and-run.

It's exciting to see that there are actual plans from the new owners of the Lloyd Center.
