The tty and Xorg stutters every couple seconds. I have a partition with Linux on it where there are no issues like this. I expected OpenBSD to be a bit slower (which I'm fine with for the extra security) but not lag like this.

Specs:

  • MSI MPG X670E CARBON
  • AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-core 24-threads
  • AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT
  • 64GB of RAM @ 6000MHz
  • OpenBSD 7.5

I'm getting these concerning messages in dmesg:

drm:pid0:amdgpu_device_init *ERROR* gpu post error!
drm:pid0:amdgpu_driver_load_kms *ERROR* Fatal error during GPU
init
drm1 detached
amdgpu1 detached
"ATI Raphael" rev 0xc2 at pci24 dev 0 function 0 not configured)

So my suspicion is that my GPU isn't being loaded properly.

I've read that disabling ReBar in the BIOS would help, but it made no difference for me.

I've also run fw_update to ensure that the firmware/drivers are installed:

fw_update: add none; update none; keep amd, amdgpu, vmm

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How could I get started with BSD?

hello,

I want to learn and deep dive into BSD systems. I am a Linux user for more than 3 years and now I am curious to learn and use BSD since BSD is similar to Linux and has binary compatibility.

sadly my laptop wifi card isn't supported by any BSD systems. so I can't use it as my daily driver. so where should I go or do to learn more about BSD?

KDE launched version 6 of its Plasma desktop environment on February 28, 2024, bringing numerous updates and features as well as the major switch to Qt6. I am immensely proud that the OpenBSD team has managed to prepare for this major update so swiftly. All necessary components have been committed to our CVS tree, and the packages will soon be available.

YES! KDE6 landed in OpenBSD -current

Hetzner (like many other providers) do not provide #OpenBSD machines.. but there is a nice #syadmin trick to install your beloved OS over whatever they provide. In this video we will see how you. In short:

  1. Create your #GNU / #Linux machine
  2. Login, wget & dd the IMG
  3. Reboot in Console and install using network installation (say http packages)
  4. Reboot in your new OS
  5. Have fun.

I frequently find myself needing to rerun commands with the -h flag, and I was just wondering why it is not the default behavior of programs to show sizes in human-readable terms?
