Systemd 254 has been released. As usual, there is a long list of changes, including a new list-paths command for systemctl, the ability to send POSIX signals to services, a "soft reboot" feature that restarts user space while leaving the kernel in place, improved support for "confidential virtual machines", and a lot more.

The announcement also notes the support for split-/usr systems will be removed in the next release, and support for version-one control groups and for System V service scripts will be deleted in the near future as well.

So, this sucks. On Mint, Firefox was running super sluggish to the point of being unusable. I reinstalled Ubuntucinnamon because I enjoyed using it when I had it installed, but between me last having it installed and now there seems to have been an update that has broken cinnamon's system tray. Which, for me, is a major functionality.

I really don't want to twiddle my thumbs waiting and trying to figure out why shit isn't working right, but I really do like the cinnamon de. ugh

ideas?

If so how is it? I'm heavily considering grabbing an M1 and trying it out if it's in a state where I can be productive.

For context, I use an M1 for work and it's awful only thanks to macOS. The hardware is excellent though. I can run an army of containers for hours, I can have OBS running in the background if I need to quickly record something, and I can have 2-3 JetBrains IDEs running without skipping a beat.

But I truly cannot comfortably use macOS in my personal space. I don't really want to go into my gripes with macOs; suffice to say it's not a route I'm willing to explore any further.

That said, I've tried to keep up with Asahi Linux but have not seen very much feedback from those who are using it.

If you are using it I'd love to hear some feedback on what you like or dislike about it. Does all your hardware work? Do all your standard linux applications work?

In the past I read Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development Book which is a highly esteemed and recommended book on the topic. However as time passes it become at least half obsolete. https://rlove.org/

Red Hat made being a 1:1 clone hard. So AlmaLinux is pivoting and speeding up.

Update on what happened across the GNOME project in the week from July 15 to July 22.

Hey, I use the Adobe Suite for daily use to build and develop posts and videos for multiple people and can't have my workflow slow down by learning a new application, I've looked into Linux a few times and want to really move over in the future but due to it not having support for Adobe, I'm not sure what to do.

One of the other applications I use is Sync (sync.com), It's an application to sync your files from a folder to the cloud allowing me to switch from my to laptop (what I can't run most things on) and then I can still access the files on the go if I need to send them to someone.

I also play plenty of games on Steam but not all of them have native Linux Instances. I believe Proton is actually helping bring non-native games to Linux which is a plus as really wouldn't want to lose access to playing them.

Any advice on how I can get using Linux without losing these sorts of functions or do I have to wait till Windows annoys enough people making them all move to Linux first?
