As I have recently bought a secondhand 2DS, I thought I would change things up a bit!

Let's discuss the Nintendo DS series of portable consoles. What is your favorite version? What games are most memorable to you? What aspects do you like about it? What doesn't work for you? Feel free to share any thoughts that come up, or react to other peoples comments. Let's get the conversation going!

If you have any recommendations for games or series for the next post(s), please feel free to DM me or add it in a comment here (no guarantees of course).

Previous entries: Monster Hunter, Persona, Monkey Island, 8 Bit Era, Animal Crossing, Age of Empires, Super Mario, Deus Ex, Stardew Valley, The Sims, Half-Life, Earthbound / Mother, Mass Effect, Metroid, Journey, Resident Evil, Polybius, Tetris, Telltale Games, Kirby, LEGO Games, DOOM, Ori, Metal Gear, Slay the Spire

Whatcha playing!

I 100%ed Astro Bot in just a couple days lol. But really outstanding. Up there with Rayman origins as favorite platformer.

Now I'm kind of waiting for more stuff to be out. Super excited for the new Zelda and cautiously optimistic for the sh2 remake

I feel like I've played a good amount of horror titles, and I find I don't really get scared much anymore.

What are some titles that scared you the most? I would love to hear your recommendations!

Taking inspiration from the let's discuss threads here. So. We all know PlayStation, Xbox. All that but what about systems from lesser brands? What do you like, dislike, what interests you?

For me, I've always found micro consoles interesting. Even if they suck in practice. Alps plug and play systems are cool. Was too young for both of those tho

I had thus Lexibook handheld. Imaging a GBA. Just shit. That's what it kinda was, generic games and stuffDied after a few years. I also had the leapster explorer and a leapster2 I got second hand, they were OK as a kid, but the hames are shit in kindsight. The explorer now has life as a crap emulator.

Currently I emulate on handhelds but not sure what that would fall under.

Tanooki Mario (comfy man in pajamas), and uhhhh...well i don't really have a Smash main, I like to play all kinds of different styles. Which I guess also fits the question....

Sharing this because of my recent growing interest in the genre and because this is one of the series that I've actually played a bit.

Pre-orders are up on play-asia and elsewhere https://www.play-asia.com/search/Raiden+NOVA

Critic Reviews

Digital Trends - 4.5 / 5

UFO 50 will remind you why you fell in love with video games in the first place.

Eurogamer - 5 / 5

A collection of new-old sports games, RPGs, platformers and puzzlers: what is all this sweet work worth?

God is a Geek - 9.5 / 10

UFO 50 is a celebration of retro gaming, full of wonderful modern ideas, sensational video games and a whole lot of content.

PC Gamer - 83 / 100

A superb retro-style smorgasbord in real danger of drowning out its own consistently good work.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Unscored

The 1980s reimagined as a collection of 50 "small" games, ranging from arcade racers to full-blown RPGs.

Siliconera - 9 / 10

Faux retro compilation UFO 50 is a can't-miss release.

Slant Magazine - 4 / 5

You’ll occasionally come across signs bearing dreamlike musings: “the sea shells form a bridge between us,” “there is a dark shape on the horizon,” and so on. As you travel further, the wind changes direction and the evening sky shifts from orange to purple. Platforms get sparser and require leaps of faith or hope. And when you inevitably miss and Waldorf falls into the sea, he wakes up on an ice floe, surrounded by sleeping walruses, waiting to dream again. It’s the clearest example of UFO 50’s willingness to experiment paying off in something as fun to play as it is interesting conceptually, but in a crowded field, it’s far from the only one.

TheGamer - 4.5 / 5

Sitting down with this collection is stepping into an alternate timeline, and having 50 timeless 8-bit gems dumped into your lap. The level of variety, and the incredible quality of each game, make UFO 50 an absurd value. For anyone looking to experience the magic of video games, I can’t stress enough how excellent UFO 50 is. It is an out-of-this-world collection.

Tune in on October 19.

As the narrator for Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Lenval Brown recorded 350,000 words of dialogue. His warm, crackling tone is one you'll associate with Disco Elysium forever after playing it, though he's also popped up elsewhere—like in retro shooter Ultrakill, city builder Republic of Pirates, and as the host of our own documentary series, Tales from the Hard Drive.

To register for Voice of the Narrator: A Disco Elysium livestream, you'll need to donate to a gofundme to help Dr. Alaa Abu Musa and his family evacuate the Gaza Strip. (Suggested donations are $US60.) Then fill out the registration form linked at the Workshops 4 Gaza event page. The livestream will take place on October 19, from 3–5pm EST.

Looking at reviews, it seems like a common criticism of the second game is that it's mostly a repeat of the first with a few additions, but also without fixing any of its issues.

To people who have played both: is it worth playing the second one? I already have the first, as it was included in a bundle, but never played it.

  • Thanks everyone for answering! I'll be playing DD first then.
