Oh my god you just awakened so many memories with this post. Battle Athletes Victory is such an underrated gem. That Battle Athletes remake was an atrocity.
Also OVA is best version with a bittersweet ending that always gets me.
Edit: Have you played the PS2 game the anime is based off of? Could never get a copy but there's some weird shit on there.
