The title sounds to me like he has solved some long standing problem in geometry, but the content seems like he just applies geometric techniques to computer science. And I am not even sure how deep and impactful these ideas are.

MIT CSAIL seems to have a reputation of being rather application-focused (which is NOT a criticism BTW); from the limited information provided by this article, this person doesn't feel like an exception.
