I successfully set up a selfhosted Lemmy instance using docker and subscribed to various lemmy.ml communities. But [email protected] and [email protected] specifically aren't loading any posts or (I assume) comments.

I don't see any errors in the container logs either. Any help is appreciated!

Check out this comment thread: https://lemmy.world/comment/22210

Basically, when you subscribe to a community you're asking for your server to get FUTURE updates posted to that community. You do not get historical backfill. So yeah, posts initially show up without comments because you're missing the old ones and haven't yet received any new ones. If you wait a while, you'll get the comments from the beginning on newly created posts made after you subscribed.

Ah, it was this. I know the Lemmy community is much smaller than Reddit, but I guess I was still expecting a bit more movement. But that's okay, as long as it's working as intended.

Thanks!

That makes sense! Thanks

This might be part of the issue: Please make sure you have “undetermined” selected in your list of spoken languages in your lemmy settings. Most lemmy content does not come through with a language tag, and you need to have undermined selected as an option to see that content.

I'm experiencing the same issue with those communities, have you found a solution?

Yeah, there wasn't actually a problem, it's just that federation only fetches new content, and those communities just don't happen to be very active.

Hey, me too! Got my new instance up and running today: https://hakbox.local and see the same behavior where posts are all showing 0 comments.

I have undetermined selected, but federated communities I have subscribed to have 0 comments.
