MODERATORS

Hey guys,

Do you think it makes sense to create a service which allows users to spawn and host their own instances of Lemmy?

I understand that Lemmy is about distributed communities and Fediverse, but I am also thinking that we could increase adoption if we allow non tech-savvy communities to join in.

What are your thoughts?

its inevitable. just like wordpress sites. but the fediverse is still young. its going to take some time to work out the mod tooling, domain handling, etc.

i know lots of people get all butthurt about csam and piracy, but its just moderation like any other forum.

Could you elaborate on domain handling?

the hostname+domain to use for the instance. would require registration (if not a using an already registered subdomain) and associated certificates. impossible to change once you start federating... like a house street address.

There’s already at least one company doing it (based on a quick Google search).

I'm sure a quick search of your choice would get you there.

Sure. What's your plan for moderating content like piracy, death threats, CSAM, and terrorism?

For all of the above, except 🏴‍☠️🚢

Why are you so salty?

Good questions you are asking. If I were to think out loud, I’d say this would require some kind of global moderation.

Hmm. I'm not sure what the advantage would be over just creating communities on existing instances, then, if someone else is still going to be the admin.

One real-life community may need several Lemmy communities as per each topic.

Then make several lemmy communities on an existing instance.
