Sorry to link to YouTube for this, but it's just such a great example of actual humor from the decades where it was allowed to joke about it.

So in your opinion you can't make yokes about piracy nowerdays? How did you get to that conclusion?

I honestly don't even think this is that edgy of a sketch ...

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't get where OP is going with this either?

Perhaps some overzealous reference to the fact that Graham Linehan is a massive wanker, butthurt transphobe. The way you "can't really make rape/racist/sexist/transphobic jokes anymore". He doesn't really make TV anymore. This skit on the other hand, as well as most of Father Ted and The IT Crowd, is perfectly PG.

The episode came out over 15 years ago...

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So? My point was, that you could easily make this joke today, why not?

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago

Vaguely conservative people love to claim that "you can't joke about anything nowadays!!" but everytime I ask for an example it's either completely banal stuff like this sketch, or it's just straight up bigotry with the thinnest veneer of "a joke".

Like, sorry that calling a trans woman a guy or saying weird shit about Muslims isn't funny in 2023, but good god get some fucking actual material.

My reply was regarding this:

I honestly don’t even think this is that edgy of a sketch …

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Oh, so just additional information? Or I'm being dull :D

Crap, I've known this skit back from when YouTube had 5-star rating system on videos, and learned it comes from The IT Crowd just today

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's a fantastic show still, very funny. :)

I used to love this show until that one transphobic episode. After watching that I looked up the main show writer and learned that he is huge piece. Such disappointment.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Thought the joke was more that the character was transphobic and it was an iran pun

Death of the author: The gag is that we think Douglas is shockingly progressive when his date tells him she "used to be a man" and he doesn't care and it becomes the most healthy relationship he has in the entire series (and this includes him repeatedly trying to rape Jen and at least assaulting Roy and Moss). But then we remembering he is deviance personified and probably just doesn't care because he has a fun girl he can stick it in. But instead, he misheard her and it becomes the "ha ha, you fucked a dude" joke of the 80s/90s. Which is pretty transphobic on its own and was in the tail end of when that was "acceptable"

Then it somehow becomes a drawn out bare knuckle brawl. Which I don't personally think is transphobic in and of itself, but it is incredibly triggering and plays on the very real fear of trans people getting assaulted if someone finds out they transitioned. So probably not transphobic, but incredibly assholish.

Then, death to the author, we kind of know that Graham Linehan is a complete dipshit who is openly anti-trans and it is hard to give any form of "benefit of the doubt". And apparently Richard Ayoade capes for him constantly. And it is the show that skyrocketed Noel Fielding (the guy we try to forget was best friends with russel brandt and associated with most of his "debauchery" back when it was considered "funny"). So... the show is a mess.

I still think the show as a whole is a masterpiece, but there are definitely some gags that just don't play well. But... I also think it is a perfect example of "just pirate it so that nobody gets any money". Similar to stuff like rurouni kenshin.

I like that term also, "death of the author"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Tbf a lot of that show's had... Less than favourable views. Graham Linehan, being endorsed by Richard Ayoade, Chris O'Dowd, Noel Fielding.

Humor can be read in various ways, the author's public statements and policy paints a cringey picture, unfortunately. I am not a trans person myself, so the tastefulness of this humor is hard for me to judge. Still, this particular episode has left a bad taste, even if the show as a whole cracks me up. Doesn't help that I am growing into a huge Matt Berry fan

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

True. I think this is a case of knowing how the author thinks sets the tone, unfortunately.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

That one, and the writer, have not aged well. Old shows often have jokes that just leave a bad taste today, and Graham Linehan's unpleasant politics add to this. But it seems he went off the deep end after he had finished his best work, and aside from this episode the rest remains funny and watchable.

The UK is a very casually transphobic handful of countries.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

YouTube's 5-star rating system... It's been a while since that was a thing. YouTube sure felt more fun back then.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago

and then steal it agaiiiiiin!

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The IT Crowd basically cemented itself as timeless by never directly referencing anything super techy that would date it. Sure, there's a guitar hero controller and an xbox 360 in a lot of shots, as well as some 4:3 laptops, but that's about it.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There is that one episode where they go into intense detail about how the Internet functions. They even show it!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Duh! It's wireless!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I’ve got friends who still play games on their computers with an XBOX360 controller!

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago

What you forgot to mention is that someone bought the original piracyisacrime.com domain as printed on your DVD. They made it redirect to The IT Crowd piracy scene :d

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I know we have piped bot, but you can just pink the piped version then you won't have to apologise for it.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

I prefer people posting the original source, and I'll just let LibRedirect (on desktop) or LibreTube (on mobile) switch the link to my preferred Piped instance. I don't want to use random instances.

I feel like most people who feel strongly against YouTube will have it set up similarly to where you automatically get redirected when clicking a link anyways. You can always offer up a Piped link in the text box or the comments as an alternative.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If I want to watch a tiny circle spin for 5 minutes, I'll go to piped myself. Otherwise let's stick to youtube.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I bet you pay youtube premium.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

No, I just prefere it when my video actually loads on the same day.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I love the idea of piped but it’s always like… 240p and I have gigabit.
